NUVI 760 Power Issues

Greetings...
I have a Nuvi 760 that is about 18 months old. Up until now, I have had no issues with it. I keep the firmware up to date but have not updated to the newest map version.
I almost never use the battery preferring to keep it plugged in to the DC in my car. Usually (not 100%), when I get home, I take it out of the window and turn it off.
Now, it will only work when plugged in to AC power. It will also go into USB mode when I hook to laptop. I can plug the AC adapter into the power inverter in my car and it will work like that but on the window mount with the DC adapter - nothing. Also, once I unplug from the AC, the battery only lasts fifteen or so minutes.
Suggestions...?
power problem
Sounds like a dead or dying battery. One possible thing you can try is to drain the battery completely and fully recharge it. If that doesn't help the battery needs replacement.
Power Problem
Does the battery have to be good in order for it to work on DC power? Why would it work on AC but not DC...?
Thanks for your help.

You have two problems
Does the battery have to be good in order for it to work on DC power? Why would it work on AC but not DC...?
Thanks for your help.
You actually have two separate problems.
1. Your car charger is defective. Or it may be your cradle mount that is defective, since your car charger plugs into the mount, not the Nuvi. The only way to tell for sure is to try another cradle. This is assuming that the power LED on the charger indicates that it has power.
2. Your battery is bad and needs to be replaced. If it's that old and won't hold a charge, it is most likely beyond reconditioning.
fully charged?
For #2, you may want to make sure the battery is fully charged, or at least 50% full which should give more than one hour of power.
Or
1. Your car charger is defective.
Or the fuse in the tip is blown.

Fuse
The light on the end of the charger DOES light when plugged into the car. That would not happen if the fuse was blown, correct?
Also, for battery replacement, is that something that can be done 'in the field' or does it have to go back to Garmin? How expensive is that?

Fuse
If the light in the car charger lights, then yes, the fuse is OK.
Battery replacement depends on how comfortable you are trying to take apart your GPS. There are several topics here, "how-to" videos on YouTube and folks here ready to help you with questions.
If you send it to Garmin, they will just swap it out with a referb unit. You won't get your original unit back, most likely. Any cost will depend on the unit model and whether it is in or out of warranty. Call Garmin for a price.
Some folks here have taken their unit to Batteries Plus and let them take the unit apart and replace the battery. There are a few topics on here about that and also a Batteries Plus POI file to see if there is one near you.

Btw, did you try wiggling DC charger wires? Perhaps the wire is broken internally.
Wouldn't That
If the light in the car charger lights, then yes, the fuse is OK.
depend on which LED is lighting up? The Traffic LED (closest to the GPS) lights without external power.

Troubleshooting
Yes, it's the green light on the DC Charger that comes on... I assume that means the fuse is not blown..?
I purchased a Power Inverter for my truck and when I plug the AC Charger into that, the 760 works fine. I take that to mean either the DC Charger or Cradle are bad. I suppose it's also possible that the connection on the 760 itself (for the cradle) could be damaged..?
I have purchased a non-traffic DC Charger Cord and tried that - still have issues. Rule that out...
If I send back to Garmin and they swap my unit out, I will lose all of my saved locations, correct? I don't want to do that. Can I save them somehow?
Thanks for all the help,
Clay

Not worth it....
If your unit is out of warranty it will cost you over $200 for Garmin to replace the battery or the unit itself. Not worth it as you can buy a new 780 at Costco.com for $249 or a 750 for $199. You can also try and replace the battery as others have told you. Call Garmin and they may be able to give you an answer as to what is wrong. Before you reset the unit be sure and copy the GPX file so you can add it back if it is deleted.

No

Both of the LEDs can be green. The way to check the fuse is to unscrew the tip and test the fuse with a continuity tester or ohmmeter. However, if you tried the non-traffic adapter and that didn't work, it would not likely be the adapter. Have you tried it in a different car to make sure it is not the lighter?

Cradle
It sounds like the cradle. There are 2 lights on the plug but one is for traffic and the other power. If it works with an AC adapter it should work with the DC adapter unless it's not converting to the right voltage. 12v to 5v. If it is that situation the green light could still be on but not getting the prper voltage to operate.

Troubleshooting
Yes, I have tried in two different vehicles with the same results.

Pardon my ignorance, how do you copy the GPX file? Is that where the 'Favorites' are stored??
Any chance resetting it will solve my problem??

What is the difference between the 750, 760 and 780..?

.
There are 2 lights on the plug but one is for traffic and the other power.
And, if you have a traffic subscription and either the lighter fuse or the adapter fuse is blown, you will get one green LED, the traffic LED being powered by the GPS.

GPX File

Yes that is where your favorites are stored. When you attach your unit with the USB cable a drive shows up for the NUVI. Scroll down and under the Garmin folder there is a folder called GPX. Copy its contents to your computer or the whole file whichever you prefer. If after resetting your favorites are missing you can copy them back onto the unit.

Not much difference
What is the difference between the 750, 760 and 780..?
The 760 is the same as the 750 with the addition of Bluetooth. The 780 is the same as the 760 with the addition of MSN traffic.

The 760 will also show MSN
The 760 will also show MSN info if the expensive cable and subscription is purchased.
