If you go to My Garmin page https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces .Right below sign in has two options forgot user name and password.Click on one of them. You should get prompt to put email address in and they will send information back to sign in.

Are the lifetime maps only

Are the lifetime maps only good for the unit you currently own, or is it transferable to a unit you may purchase in the future?

Only the one you register

They are only valid for the unit you register at the time of the first download.
UNLESS you have to change the unit under warrantee AND, I believe, if you send your unit into Garmin for repairs and they send you a replacement unit.

Yes, those are the only conditions under which you may transfer the maps.

A friend of mine whom I sold

A friend of mine whom I sold my 660 had the same issue. For some reason even though I contacted Garmin support and informed them that I was no longer the owner of the 660 and now it belongs to my friend, I had assumed everything was ok, but this new update, he is now allowed to receive the update due to the fact Garmin says it is not registered to him. He is at this time placing a call to Garmin support to resolve this situation.

Nick,
That was a huge mistake calling Garmin in the first place, you are the registered owner of the unit not him, nor can he ever be for the lifetime maps. Him calling is not going to help, only make it worse.

Should still be by Serial number

You own it..Not the User name...so it is a serial numbered unit..Call Garmin that should not be an issue. I am surprised that it didnt say this unit is already registered when you signed it up,,

The Lifetime Maps are not transferable to another person regardless. If you sell the unit, the Lifetime Map update cannot be transferred to the new owner.
