.

Each time you run POI Loader, it compiles all the Custom POI files in the folder on your computer into a single file named POI.GPI and it overwrites the previous POI.GPI file.

The most simple thing to do is to place ALL of the Custom POI files that you want on your GPS unit into a single folder on your COMPUTER and KEEP THEM THERE.

Then when you run POI Loader, you will load ALL of them at the same time.

You can have custom named folders

From POI loader you can point to a single folder on your PC which contains all of your POI files. Each time you run POI loader, it will replace the existing file on your GPSr with the contents of that folder. Further, you can have one level of folders within that single folder which you can name however you like. Your individual POI files will then be put in these folders. Under Extras (on most GPS units)you will see the folder names and selecting them you will go to the POIs you are looking for.

You can have custom named folders

Yes, absolutely. As stated above, the important thing from the PC perspective is to put all the POI files you download (or create yourself) into a single folder and then know where you put that folder. Give that folder a name that is meaningful such as POI Files. All the .csv, .mp3, .bpm, .gpx, etc. that are related to the POI files will go here. When you run POI Loader, point it to this folder and the loader will roll it up into a big ball and copy it to your nuvi or sd card as a .gpi file as Motorcycle Mama said. It will replace the .gpi file that already exists, so as you download new or updated POI files and put them into the folder on your PC, then next time you run POI loader you will have a fresh load on your nuvi.

If you have a lot of POI files and want to organize them better on the nuvi, I would like to expand on what mkahn stated. Lets say you have a lot of fuel stops (Luvs, T/A, Pilot, etc.) Create a sub folder within your POI File folder and you could name it Fuel Stops. Drag all the fuel stop related files into this folder. You could create a folder call Restaurants and drag your Cracker Barrel and others into it and so on.

The important thing is that you have one master folder and one layer of sub-folders nested within it. If you want these subfolders to show up on the nuvi at the top of the list of Custom POI, then put a space or a - at the beginning of the folder's name ( - Fuel Stops ) and they will float to the top and any remaining POI in the base folder will be listed directly below those folders on the nuvi after POI loader does its thing.

slipery little poi just wont stay there

i think i tried what you said .sounded simble but,i made a yellow folder on by desktop ,i put the lowes file on the desktop then home depot.drug them in the folder.i name the yellow folder lumber, then ran poi loader .when i looked in gps extras there was no folder named lumber. the depot file and lowes file where not together.im not shure about csv or gpx should i be using these. thanks for taking the time to help .

.

Motorcycle Mama has an excellent explanation and illustrations of the easiest way to create categories:
arrow http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8674

Basically, your method didn't work because you pointed to the folder that contained the files. To get categories you must point to a folder that has subfolders in it -- the names of the subfolders become the categories.

pointing to

Using your example.Main folder on desktop with lowes and home depot inside the main folder.

>Lumber =main folder on desktop
>>lowes.csv
>>home depot.csv

Run poiloader and when it comes to browse, find and select the folder you named lumber.
Continue on with poiloader.
You should get message so many pois loaded when you finish.

On gps touch where to.Then touch extras. Now touch custom pois and you should see them there after touching custom pois.

Did you really get a category of "Lumber" showing up under Custom-POIs? That is what you said you wanted -- organization/categories. You cannot name the main folder "Lumber", choose that folder as the source for POI Loader, and have that folder name show up as a category.

pois

Now to prevent any future confusion.Rename the lumber main folder to something like My Pois. Then as you download other files just add them to the new renamed folder My Pois folder.Remember every time you run poiloader it will overwrite all the existing custom pois you put in.So get all the csv files loaded at one time on your computer before running poiloader.

No drawbacks until you reach around 32 files and anything over that will not show on gps. Then you may want to look at subfolders.I sent you that information earlier.Right now lets just stay with this process of loading them until you get the feel for it.You may decide to stay with this method instead of subfolders.Your choice.

main folder

yes i did get lumber .i did what 265wt said to do.i made a new folder on the desktop its name is lumber.i put what i wanted in that folder.then ran poi loader. then browes to that folder. it showes up in extras as lumber.i make shure there are no other gps files on the desktop when i doit.i now have 7 new categorys . i dont no why but its not overwriting .maybe becuse im only doing one at a time.

this worked even better

this worked even better thanks. so i made a folder on the desktop mypoi . then draged all my diffrent files in the one file.so it shows up in extras as lumber / thrift stores/ stores...what i like about this i can leave it on the desktop and just add to it.let poi loader do the rest. took some time to get it but so happy now thanks again .

Summary of what worked for me

On c:\Garmin I created a folder >POI then I created subfolders >>Fav Foods, >>Office Supplies, >>Drugs. In each folder I put multiple csv files.

One looked like this:
c:\Garmin\POI\Office Supplies\Staples.csv OfficeDepot.csv

I then used the Poi Loader and loaded them to the same file sfolder I created in the Garmin.

It then looked like this:
Garmin nuvi:\POI\Office Supplies\Poi.gpi
See the difference? It transferrred and combined the two files into one file in the folder. But when viewed on the Garmin they still show up seperately.

This is nice since using the Poi Loader erase feature does not erase content in folders. You also do not have to rename the Poi.gpi file.
