POI Loader ERROR

I can download the Garmin POI Loader file (PC Vista) OK, but when I run the Garmin installer, I get an ERROR that states..."The Specified Path '%APPDATA%' is unavailable"

When I close the ERROR window, the installer says I've installed the POI Loader, but it's not anywhere to be found, no will it 'launch' when I hit the 'DONE' button...so I guess the ERROR is hanging up the install..

I even tried to run the installer with my Nuvi 650 plugged into the PC...still the same ERROR message...

Any Ideas??? Thanks..

If you are a Vista user I would strongly suggest installing the free VMware player (or some alternate virtual machine environment), and then install XP into a virtual machine. POI Loader is likely to not be the only program that vista gives you problems with.

I have XP on my laptop, and

I have XP on my laptop, and might try POI Loader per your suggestion....

I can't believe Garmin hasn't tested this program on Vista PC's, though - it's been around too long for this kind of complaint, if that's the problem...

I've had five Garmin units over the years, and this is my first 'glich' with their stuff - and it's probably MY problem, not theirs...

I did email a request to Garmin support about this problem - will have to wait for their input also...thanks.

i run vista

and i have had no problems with POI loader

I don't have vista, but w/ WinXP if you click Start - Run - type in "%appdata%" and Enter, you should see a Garmin folder with Devices & Web Link Extensions folder. You can try creating the following folders manually:
1. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\GARMIN
2. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\GARMIN\Devices
3. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\GARMIN\Web Link Extensions

I must be lucky..

maybe you don't have the right permissions?

POI loader and Vista work fine together for me. Is it possible that you don't have the proper privileges on the account you are running the installer on? If you aren't an admin, you might not have access to that folder. To see if you do, try this:

1. in windows explorer, go to C:\Users\
2. find the AppData folder and right click on it
3. click the Security tab
4. look for your user name under the list of "Group or user names"
5. If your username isn't there, you will need to add it

here's where I get fuzzy because I am not sure what permissions you need to have to add permissions. But this is how I would do it.

6. click the Edit button
7. click the Add button
8. enter your username in the box
9. click the Check Names button to confirm your user name is entered correctly
10. click the OK button
11. make sure all the boxes in the allow column are checked
12. click the OK button

Try running the installer again.

Hope that helps!

I run POI Loader on Vista 64-bit, Vista 32-bit and Windows 7 without any issues.

Is the file you downloaded and ran for the install named POILoaderforWindows_253?

If it was successfully installed, it will be in the start menu (Start, All Programs, Garmin, POI Loader). And it will also appear as "Garmin POI Loader" in Control Panel, Programs
