I'm curious how useful lane assist feature is. These questions are for GPS owners who have this feature.
On a 5-6 lanes freeway, does the system know what lane we're in? Does it actually tell us what lane we're supposed to be on? When approaching a junction or an exit, does it keep telling us what lane we're supposed to be on until we merge onto that lane?
From what I've read it looks like lane assist is represented by picture on the map. Highlighted lanes are the ones we're supposed to be on. There's no speech to tell us what lane we're supposed to be on. Is this correct?
Something i will
make sure my next GPS has -- for sure!

possible problems
anyone notice changes in lane assist??
I have a garmin 765, I took essentially the same trip, same starting point same destination about a week apart, the only change in my unit was I updated the maps. to the best of my memory it worked great the first time and the second not so much. where the first time it showed all the changes between roads, the second time it only showed one.
Lane Assist is Great
Lane assist even works on non-freeway streets, as long as the Map has that information. In the Chicago area, I've found it works on most multi-lane streets.
I Will Agree
Lane assist seems to be pretty helpful. As to whether or no junction view is that much a step above I don't know. I helps even when I'm on my local freeways, because sometimes I am too damn busy with road rage and all that good stuff. I never drive stupid it's only the other guy, or gal!
Lane Assist/Juntion View,,,,
I find both very helpful when I'm driving in areas that I'm not very familiar with.
The Junction View is especially helpful when navigating unfamiliar multiple junctions (the "Spaghetti Bowl" highway merges - like in Texas, LA, Chicago area, etc).
Just two things though - not all highway junctions are shown with this feature - it depends on whether Garmin/Navteq added them or not, (most of the Florida interchanges seem to work) and #2 - you have to pay attention in areas with multiple junctions - at highways speeds & short distances between junctions - you sometimes have VERY little advance warning of which lane to be in.
That being said - I find these features some of the most helpful tools when I'm traveling in a new area.

Check out this Demo link from Garmin. When it opens click the 4th tab down, Watch Demo Video, to see different features including lane assist and junction view.

Just remember, not all intersections have a junction view but they all seem to have lane assistance while you are navigating.

Thanks
I do go that way often so I'll give it a try. Thanks
The only problem with lane
The only problem with lane assist is that the Garmin does not what lane you are in. This would be a nice feature if the Garmin knew what lane you are in and it tells you to move over. Wishful thinking for future products.
Yes, real wishful thinking
Knowing what lane your in is a ways off. With Garmin still working on map accuracy and if you throw in the GPS accuracy, you could be driving down the highway in the fast lane with your GPS hollering at you to move 1 lane to your left. Just think how those people who turn off the road now onto railroad tracks (1 week ago I think) because the GPS told them to would handle that. We would really have some entertaining reading for our forum.

Multi lane expressways
I have only found lane assist and junction view on major interstates with complex intersections and ramps. In east central Iowa where I live I haven't found any lane assists anywhere (local roads, major roads or interstates).
The reason I bought the 855 was just for the "view" that shows you which lane one needs to be in. For instance, when traveling through St. Louis at the downtown junction, it's soooo easy to get lost looking for the lane you want to take without getting run over from behind, or running over someone else that is lost more than I am......

I only find lane assist
I only find lane assist somewhat useful. The graphic in the upper left hand corner signifying the lanes and what lane you should be in is useful. Lane assist, on the other hand, is just a graphic image, you can be in any lane and it will show the graphic, it makes no assumption to what lane you are in. I see it a lot on the interstates in Atlanta.

It is my understanding that the graphic in the upper left corner is Lane Assist and is visible for all turns and splits approaching. The graphic that sometimes pops up is called Junction View and only works at some interchanges where they have a picture of the signs and occassionally is missed when passing the same spot.
I have also noticed that even though the lane assist, verbal and written turn information all seem to be keeping up with the new interstate name changes locally, the Junction View picture are not. They are still displaying the old road names.

Lane Assist and Junction View
As far as my 1490T is concerned, the Junction View and Lane Assist screens that I see on my gpsr is what BobDee depicted on his posted urls.
Helps if out of town,,,,
Both lane assist and junction view help when out of town. while junction view helps I think the lane assist is better only becuase it shows you what lane to be in before junction view does.
love lane assist
I love lane assist. It shows an actual picture of the roadway that you are on with the various lanes and signs and points you in the right direction. It helps clear up the confusion when the road divides.

I found two roads after the recent map update that show lane assist arrows incorrectly that were correct prior to the update.

You're confused

You're confusing Junction View with Lane Assist. It's JV that displays a "picture" of the upcoming junction as you approach it and it's only a relatively small percentage of junctions that get displayed.
Lane Assist, on the other hand, is always visible in the upper left hand corner (at least on my 1450). LA is nothing more that a display of the number of lanes available to you for your next turn even if that turn isn't for many miles. The lane(s) you are to take is highlighted with arrow(s).

If you have the latest maps (2011.40) you do have Photo Real Junction Views for many, many intersections in the Montreal area (over 3000 in all of Canada). May not need many 'lane assists' when there are that many Junction Views.

Many's the time I've exited an expressway for the parallel service road (or vice versa), and even though I'm at least 6 lane widths off the nav route, the GPS still thinks I'm on the route. The accuracy just isn't there.
I find the Lane Assist (white/grayed skinny arrows in top left corner) to be very helpful most of the time. It is easy to glance at and know what to do. It is also touch sensitive, so touching it will bring up a screen with a bird's eye map view.
The Junction View graphic image of an interchange/signs rarely comes up where I do most of my driving, and when it does it seems to disappear too soon. The Lane Assist arrows are almost always visible and usually accurate.
That may be a while off, in time.

Atlthough I (usually) know what lane I am in, it is a bit much to expect a GPS to be able to detect and display that. The accuracy just isn't there (yet).
That said, lane assist is a great tool, and I would not want a gps without it!

Should I update for this?
Is it worth it to update my 750 to a 755 for these features? I've seen 755t for as little as $140 recently...

According to the TomTom web site their new 2535m this gps can point you to the exact lane you need.
