Best Garmin GPS

My girlfriend has a Garmin Nuvi 206 (I think) and I wanted to get one for myself. I'm willing to spend up to $300 on a new unit. What does everyone think is the best Garmin GPS unit?

Thanks

that's the eternal question

It's like what does everyone think is the best PC(or MAC) out there?

It depends on what your needs and wants are. You should do some research first and then ask questions about the features.

Of course, expect to get answers on both sides of the fence.

Newly Overhauled to Original Manufactured Status (Refurb)

A refurbished unit from a Ebay Dealer that is also a Garmin Dealer. $300.00 will buy the best!

You might also be able to pick up the 760 at your local Sams or Costco for about the same price.

Not loud enough

Indeed. However, Nuvi 760 voice isn't loud enough.
Startup sometimes take 2-4 minutes (to lock on sat).

Btw, on another thread, someone posted Nuvi 850 @ Amazon for $299.99. That's one heck of a deal. Here it is: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21925

I like the fact that the speakers are on the front side but too bad there's no bluetooth.

GPSmagazine.com tells you

GPSmagazine.com tells you all the features. Look at the buyers guide and the reviews for more information and to help you make your decision. I have a Nuvi 350 that is very basic but highly rated.

Nuvi 780

Costco.com have Nuvi 780 for $250. That a very good deal!

I've heard many reports from nuvi 8x0/8x5 owners that the dual front-firing speakers are no better in volume levels than the single rear-firing speakers of the 7x0/7x5 series. In fact, the lowly nuvi 200 I once owned was probably 15-25% louder than either my 750, 760 or 765. Go figure...

I assume the case size itself plays a factor since the 200's smaller case has a higher resonant frequency than the larger case, absorbing less of the sound.

Best Garmin?

The best Garmin unit is the one that satisfies all your needs.

Nuvi360

nice price

gps that is very fast at acquiring sattelites is a nuvi 255w. Doesn't have a lot of the features of the upper end nuvi's, but is a pretty solid gps.

the total price is $180 from Adorama and they are a solid company.

I can hear just fine if I flip it 180 degree (the speaker faces me) but of course I can't see the display. I figure I should be ok with 850 front speakers. I should've bought an 800 series instead of 700s.

Best Garmin / Refurb

Is there anyway to know what version of maps you get when you buy a refurb. Can you get a free update with a refurb purchase? I am sure this was covered at some point. I'm just too lazy to search around for it.

Agreed, I could not make any other rec at this time. It's an exceptional value right now.

volume

I wish there was a volume button so that you could adjust the volume easily.

ask

I think you'll have to ask the re-seller. Many times the latest map set is installed sweeting the offering.

Best for you

...current and near term future needs.

Since you have access to a unit you can see if it satisfies your current needs. It may not have a some features you'd like, or more importantly need or use.

I ended up buying a Nuvi 260 last year since it satisfied 90% of what I wanted and 100% of what I needed at a price I was willing to pay. It cost less than my budget for a new GPSr. That made it the "best" one for me.

Long term there are some features that it doesn't have that my next unit must have, but in the time since I bought it, it satisfied all of my current and near term needs.

Not a specific answer to the question on which unit to buy, but no one else can answer that for you.
