If the cameras you were seeing were white, look kind of like a long Pringle's canister - those are used to control traffic actuated signals where the lights stay green in one direction most of the time - and cycle when one of the cameras senses traffic and triggers the lights to cycle.

Alas, there are actually some out there that look like canisters. but usually they at least have flash unit somewhere near, but not necessarily attached.

I'll try to get some shots of the ones they have installed in Providence. I have seen at least two versions of them.

In my area there are signs warning of the camera before you approach the intersection.
Not sure if there is a law requiring this.

On another note, I saw a bunch of redlight cams in Houston last week that were off the main drags, and not in the database. I was in a hurry and didn't get a chance to mark their locations. In the future I'm going to make sure I have a way of logging these things. They were *definitely* redlight cams, they looked the same as the cameras that were in the database. Living in New Orleans, which does not have them yet, I had no idea how widespread these tax collection devices were. I can't believe people put up with them, and reelect their city governments after they are installed!

I live in Memphis and have heard from several sources that there are no RL Cams in the city. Neighboring Germantown, TN has some. I would like to know of a webpage with pics of the various RL Cam models.
