Can we use iPhone or blackberry USB chager for Garmin series GPS?

Can we use iPhone or blackberry USB chager for Garmin series GPS? I wonder if the USB charger is universal type for all kinds of handhelds like iPhone, Smartphone, Blackberry, MP4, so on. I hate to take too many power adapters and chargers with me when I travel. Man, cigarette type, wall type, laptop, Kindler reader, kill me.

.

Yes, it should work. You should check the voltage output of both adapters, however, to be sure that they are the same.

I have

I have used my blackberry usb charger for my GPS in the house before.

I use my TomTom car charger

I use my TomTom car charger to charge my blackberry all the time!

Most of the USB Plug chargers output +5v

Garmin nuvi 50

Yes, you should be able to

Yes, you should be able to charge the nuvi w/ the bb USB charger. I've done it before and had no issues.

On a related note, I use an iGo universal charger to charge all my devices when I'm on the road. Just carry one charger and a series of "tips" to charge all your devices. The tips are a bit pricey at full retail ($10), but you can usually find the one you need on eBay for much cheaper.

I would not

I would not do that ever. Garmin use a 5 pin config that is not like the others. I know of others on this site who has had ther garmin fry because of this. BUT if you go to Gomadic.com they make the garmin pin set up just for the garmin. Me I have 3 for just in case. Do not find out the hard way.

Do you recall the names of the folks on this site who "had their garmin fry" because they used a third-party charger? I find that hard to believe. As long as the charger's output is within the Nuvi's parameters then the Nuvi doesn't care how it gets charged.

I use

my Nuvi AC charger to charge my phone grin

I use

I use my Tmobile wing charger with the garmin and vice versa. No problem so far.

charger

i use my tmobile Dash Charger with no issues, just make sure that the voltage output is the same to be safe, the people who have fried there units most likly didnt do this !

All my old Blackberry cords work great with my Garmin. It has saved me a ton of cash....

USB charging

You should be able to use any USB cable that fits to successfully charge your GPS (or anything else) without problem. As another poster stated, the USB standard requires 5V on pin 1. If it doesn't provide that, it isn't USB compliant. I only have 2 or 3 cables and use them for whatever they fit.

Generic USB chargers

I have a chinese made portable media player that has a cigarette lighter and a wall unit with a USB connector on them.

I felt adventurous and used them to recharge my GPS: No problems! Even works for the Blackberry, so I carry around those two adapters and a USB cable and I'm good to go for all my devices.

Obviously, in the car I use the Garmin cable because it's the only one that will let you use the device while charging. (without altering the cable)
