New Camera in the Laurel MD (Washington Metro Area)

A new one was installed on 198E at the intersection of RT 1 South in Laurel, MD. It was just put up in the last 1-2 weeks. I don't think it is in the POI-Factory red light DB yet.

Has anyone else seen any new cameras in this area?

Guesstimate on the location

If it is at Gorman/Sandy Spring Ave and Rt 1 S, the coordinates are:

-76.84980511665344,39.0981736010519

It helps if you report a camera you provide the coordinates as well. This is an unusual intersection as both Rt 198 and Rt 1 are 1-way streets with about a block separation from the opposite direction for each route.

red light camera

Thanks for the information. I hate that they put those up.

Me too

I am worried that they could be putting up more.

One thing's for sure

They won't be taking any down!

MD and Red Light Cameras

It's big business in the DC area. Any time I am on the road it seems like new ones are going up!

Are the winds of change blowing?

In what many see as a surprising turn the MD State Senate has rejected a bill that would allow speed cameras throughout the state.

A day earlier, the Senate voted 26-19 to broaden a bill that initially allowed cameras just in construction zones to also include a half-mile radius around all schools - a plan closer to what the governor wanted.

Speed cameras in Maryland

There are already speed cameras in Montgomery county. There is one in Rockville (can't give you the coordinates as I am not there that often) which has been responsible for giving my mother 4 tickets so far. Mom has lived there 30 years and hasn't seem to change her driving habits.

There is also one in Potomac. I was driving through there on Christmas Day, 2008, and slowed down to the posted 25 mph speed limit because I'm not one for giving the state money, but the guy behind me in the giant SUV either didn't notice the cameras or doesn't mind the fines. He kept on blaring his horn at me and flashing his brights because, in his mind, I was going too slow. Then he, with his family in the car, passed me on the double yellow line. I hope he enjoyed his ticket.
