Problem with Garmin POI Loader freezing up

I'm having problems with POI Loader freezing up on more than 10,000 POI's. (not an exact number, but roughly where I'm losing capacity) All files are .gpx, converted to that format from .csv files via Turboccc's Extra_POI_Editor 2.99. Computer is a Compaq Presario 1500 with 256MB RAM. Windows XP.

POI Loader takes my files from

Main Folder: Garmin 255w (5.58 MB total)

Subfolder "Aviation" (5.25MB)
File "Airfields" (4112kb)
File "RC Model Flying" (257k)
File "NAVAIDS" (959k)
File "Glider Fields" (63k)
Icon "Glider Fields.bmp"
Icon "Airfields.bmp"
Icon "NAVAIDS.bmp"

Subfolder "Ham Radio" (304k)
File "VA Ham Repeaters" (97.6k)
File "6m Repeaters US" (206k)

Subfolder "Multi-Site Systems" (23k)
File "STARS Sites" (8k)
File "VIPER Sites" (9k)
File "WVIRP Sites" (8k)

Subfolder "Scanner Stuff" (2.26k)
File "Scanner Stuff" (2.26k)

I can load all of this if I don't include the 4112k "Airfields" file. I also have problems trying to include large files with AM/FM/TV towers.

Can anybody see in here where I could be going wrong? I'm using the latest version of Garmin POI Loader with a Windows XP laptop. POI Loader becomes unresponsive as soon as I enter the source folder and click on 'next.'

Another question: Is there an alternative to using Garmin's POI Loader program? 'm generally saving these files to my 2 meg SD chip. Should I be trying to load the chip by other means?

Thanks in advance.

You must use POI Loader to compile the gpi file. You don't show the extensions for the gpx files in your post. Are you sure that the problem file has the gpx extension (and no hidden extra extension)? Are you sure that you have given the program enough time? You say you are using a "2 meg SD chip". Am I safe in assuming it is a 2Gb card?

You generally want to avoid having numbers in the name of POI files to avoid their being construed as speed alerts, but that wouldn't cause it to freeze. I would change "6m" to "Six meter".

Since you say it works without the one file, I'd be suspicious that there is something wrong with the file. You might want to download the trial version of GeePeeEx Editor and see if it detects a problem. You won't be able to save the complete file, but I think you can check the whole thing and then decide whether to spend the $17.

I've done this, and there's a definite freeze-up.

I don't think I have hidden extensions because I enabled Windows to show extensions.

That numeral in the 6m ham file does show as a speed alert, when I scroll into the details of the file.

So . . .

Have you tried using GeePeeEx Editor to find out what is wrong with the problem file?

Couple of things. When I have problems with a file I look at it as a CSV file (converting it if needed, then converting back if wanted) because I find it easier to see what is wrong in Excel format. I take out any line spaces, check to see coordinates ,and that they are in the correct order - you can scroll quickly because if there is just one or two wrong you will see they are different from the rest.

Also, I now send my POI loader files to my computer first, as they load quicker that way, it gives me a copy of them, and then I simply copy them to my SD card or to the unit itself. Larger files make it appear that the POI loader is stuck, and even says the program is not responding. Not true, it just is taking time to load a larger file.
