The SN of "what" on "what screen"? Are you looking for the SN of a GPS or PDA or an SD Card, and what model unit is this screen you are talking about (GPS, PC/Mapsource)?

Nothing happens if you don't have the SN information on the sticker. The only important number is that Unit ID on the "about" acreen which IS "an electronic serial number" used by Garmin to generate unlock codes for any map products you might purchase. Your unlock codes are "almost" always associated with that unit ID. The exceptions are map products purchased on data cards.
Your unit ID can also be read electronically by mapsource and is also read buy the Garmin webupdater as well.
If you really care about the missing paper SN on the unit, Garmin can probably find it from your unit ID.
Sure you have looked it over good but just in case.My serial number is on a white sticker located on the bottom edge of the gps unit and very easy to miss.If all else fails look on the box it came in.
Did you buy it new or used? If you bought it from someone they may have removed the serial number for some reason before they sold it to you.
I have never heard of anyone that had a unit without a serial number on the bottom center right next to the cradle mounting port. It is very small and hard to read but if you still have the box it is on the outside of the box near the top on a small white barcode sticker.

The menu (Tools/System/About) will give you the unit ID. If you want the serial number from that, you will have to call product support.
If you purchased it used, and there is no serial number, it is possible you have a unit that was originally sold to a rental car company. This happens a lot, and these units are generally stolen units, purchased by innocent unsuspecting people.
Check with Garmin's customer support. They can clear it all up for you.

You can get the serial number by connecting by installing Garmin communicator on your PC, then going to my.garmin.com and clicking on "my dashboard"
It will give you the serial number as it would be shown on the sticker, as well as the registration date, if it is registered.
