My nuvi 760 died....

So I keep my 760 attached to its mount 95% of time, so it has constant power. The other day my wife used it, and she said it was working fine.

Today, I went to use it, and it's dead. It won't power up at all. I know it has power, because when I unplug the FM transmitter from the power jack, the nuvi supplied it with enough power to keep the LEDs on. So I don’t think it’s a battery issue…

I plugged it in to a USB port, which usually turns it on, and connects it to my computer...this time, nothing happened.

Any ideas of how to pump some life in to it?

This is a strange symptom

This is a strange symptom many 750 / 760 users have reported.

It's a rare and random occurrence. Give it some time and then try to turn it on. If it doesn't come back on, you'll have to contact Garmin.

Hopefully Garmin fixes this bug. It's very irritating and befuddling when it happens.

A Guess

Leave it plugged into the computer overnight. Chances are it has been discharged below the threshold for charging. As nuvic320 suggested, it might self-recover slightly, and if it is plugged in, it will then begin taking a charge.

As for how this happened, my suspicion is that somebody turned the unit off while still plugged into the lighter. When this happens, the screen goes black as if it is turned off, but the internal circuitry stays on -- even when the car is eventually turned off. Either this discharging takes it below the threshold or a subsequent attempt to run the unit on the battery takes it below the threshold.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/18645 , and Jackj180's posts in particular.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Yep

Same thing happened to mine right after I unplugged it from my computer one night, about 30 seconds. I KNOW my battery was full but couldn't power it on. Less than 1 month old. Sent it back to amazon for full refund (xmas gift) and replaced it with a 265wt.

For the most part I like the 265wt better, but I miss the powered dash dock and the mp3 player.

Well that was odd...

So I left it alone for a full 24 hours unplugged, and when I tried it, it turned right on...with a full charge. :-/

I knew it wasn't the battery...what an odd bug.

Thanks for the help guys! grin

Very same thing occurred with my 760. It's fine and never happened again!

The same thing happened to my 760, while on travel. I held the power key to the left for about 8 seconds and it restarted. See page 8 of the Quick Start Maanual.

Here, also

Same thing happened to my 750. I came hear and found the answer. Stopped me from getting and 880 or T model. crying

Had the same problem a week ago, Dead! Nothing helped. After three days (!) I went to the Garmin dealer. Just before I turned it in for repair I hook it up to the car mount. What happened!? It started up fine, haven't seen any problems since??
Hmm...

I updated the firmware on my 750 to v4.6 and that seems to have fixed the problem. I haven't had any problems with the unit staying on with a blank screen since the update.

Firmware Update

Does anyone know if that firmware has a fix for it?

agreed

I'm with you, I never see anything like that. But I've talked to 100's of people who have a brother, sister, cousin, aunt, uncle, neighbor, etc who got the deal of a life time. Never the person who actually got the deal..

hmmmm

I was looking to get a 760 as they are barely over $200 now.....hate to deal with warranty stuff nowadays, it can be a hassle (not sure about Garmin). One of my relatives got a LCD that died after 2 weeks--3k out of their pocket and 10 weeks without a tv. Don't want to say bad things about this mfg. as they are the official tv of one of the big sports leagues. I have one (different model) and knock on wood never an issue. But I know what's gonna happen if I do from my relatives' experience...

Even great manufacturers

Even great manufacturers sometimes have bad units slip through. The important thing is that they stand behind their products and fix them properly.

As far as being the official TV of one of the big sports leagues... That just means that they paid the most money to be called the official TV.

Professional sports is 100% business. It is about money, money, money.
