Sd and Internal memory

I use a Streetpilot c550. I have loaded POIs on the SD Card. I have also loaded my primary POIs into the unit itself. The SD card has many large files and I use it when traveling outside my normal haunts. My question: When you insert the SD Card for use as a POI source what happens to the files that are loaded in the unit's internal memory? Are they displayed as well as the SD card lists, not shown at all or deleted.I would like to pop the SD card in which has US wide listings that would take up too much space if I loaded them on the unit. In fact they would not all fit.

.

The Custom POIs from both locations would show up. If there are duplicates between the lists, they will both show up.

SD card use

I prefer using SD cards for POI's even though I have plenty of unused memory on my Garmin drive. I fill the remaining SD card memory with mp3's.

Sorry, didn't answer the question, MM did though.

Try It Befoe Asking

This here is a general comment. But I get exasperated every time I see a question similar to the one starting this thread.

Maybe the person asking thinks that they will somehow damage their GPS unit if they try it themselves without getting someones approval first.

The simple thing is to try it first and then if it dose not work then ask.

There can't be any problem with placing the SD card into the gps and then looking to see if BOTH POIs are showing up.

This thread is only and example of the many similar ones posted.

It would take almost a miracle
to damage your GPS in doing your own testing.

I understand if you don't know how to test your idea, then ask. But the question above answers the way it should be tested, so you should try it yourself first.

Now that I have stated my thoughts I will get off my soap box and stop preaching.

Sorry about all the ranting and raving here but if people would try first then ask questions after it would be nice.

Edited the rest for Coldness

Did you ever stop to think, that your second paragraph might be the reason? Why get EXASPERATED, just don't answer, if it bothers you that much.

You don't get the point.

I am trying to get people to do some things for themselves. Always relying on someone else to do your thinking is not right. And if I can get just 1 or 2 people here to try things for themselves I've accomplished my job.

As for hurting your GPS, I am not advocating: deleting files or any other things in that order.

Example of what I am talking about is when someone asks "Can I make waypoints and then route to them?" or "Can I add multiple waypoints to a route?" or "Will MapSource do.........." etc, etc.....

If they will try it for themselves they will get the answer for themselves without having to ask someone else to try it first and then tell them if it can be done. If they try it and it doesn't work. Then they can ask by telling us what they tried and what happened and then maybe someone here can help. But at least they tried an are not leaving everything up to someone else.!!!

It all go back to the old adage:"I don't mind helping those that try to help themselves first"

H Hannah,
I'm all for self reliance, however, I think you do a disservice to this community with those comments. They fall into the "sounds good" category. Sounds good to say, just do it, take the chance! Don't whine. Eat your broccoli. But I agree with BobDee, if you don't like people asking questions that you don't approve of, well, keep it to yourself.

I'm glad people ask the "dumb" questions. I've learned a lot on this forum & in life by reading & learning from them. This IS the place for them. People who don't understand something, then take the time to register & post shouldn't be chastised. That's the whole purpose for this community. We can ask anything & then those with more knowledge than ourselves can offer help.

You would like my mom, bless her heart, she gets a new appliance, uses it until something doesn't work or breaks & then takes out the instructions, reads & eventually exclaims, "oh, I didn't know your weren't supposed to do that."

The subject of GPSr's is a big & daunting one, especially for those without a technical background. Places like this bring people into the fold, especially those who may not have technologically savvy family or friends to ask. For that matter, I'm into technology & gadgets, have been for longer than I care to admit, & I'm the guy that friends & family come to with these types of questions. I just starting with all of this GPS stuff this Christmas & found many things confusing. Not so much the actual function of the units, but things like the above question, what software to use to achieve which goals & why. Garmin is rather bad when it comes to documentation & as stated earlier, this IS the place for these kind of questions.

Having said that, I would submit a general suggestion that people do search in the forums on a subject before they post to cut down on the repetition.

Please remember that just because something is self-evident to you does not mean that it is to everyone. Instead of getting upset or frustrated with posts that you deem irrelevant, use it as a self-affirmation. Pat yourself on the back & reassure yourself of how much above the norm you must be. wink

very well said Poifect

I have learned a lot by reading a post of someone who asked a "dumb" question...and as far as it being asked before, you don't always get the right thread even if you search first...so repetitive questions do serve a purpose.

I have been working with research all my days, now retired. I remember the first time I was going to write a simple letter in word, used to write reports on a typewriter. Writing the first line and trying to shift to the next line, I stopped: how do you do that? I was sitting for 15 minutes thinking, finally went to the office for advise. Never heard so many girls being used to handle Word laughing at me! After this, I used to laugh at myself more often!

You obviously don't understand the question or give consideration to the fact the person on the other end knows what he is doing. I am out of town on a guest computer. If I try the sd card and it writes over my internal stored POIs I will not have them for the rest of my trip since they are on my computer at home. If someone takes a minute to tell me if I will lose my internally stored POIs I can possibly short circuit a problem. You don't have to reply if I have irritated you. Remember there are many people with different skill levels as well as many motivations for asking. Please cut me some slack.

Just wanted to clarify, I don't mind repetitive questions & I know that they serve a purpose. I was only making a general suggestion that doing a search first may reveal the answer without posting. I've done it many times in my short connection to this site. There have been other times that I find what I'm looking for & still don't understand. That's when repetition may be just what the doctor ordered.

Having computer in hand or not, your concerns are real. My nuvi 350 will see the sd card files and ask if I want them loaded to the garmin drive. Answer yes and any poi files of same name in the Garmin\poi folder will be over-written.

As for H Hannah, please don't respond when simple questions bother you, not everyone has a handle on using the GPS thingy.
