Possible bug on 750 with SDHC card?

First post here, so a quick little intro I guess is in order.

I've been using a GPS for nearly 10 years now. First started with a Streetpilot (The original black and white one), moved up to a GPSmap 60C, and now have a nuvi 750.

After all the updates for the 750, it appears that all is working well with the unit now (I had been keeping track of all the complaints with the updates on this forum, just never joined till recently). I plan on using it as my mp3 player for my vehicles (one less device to have) but seem to have encountered a strange bug when using my 8GB SDHC card.

Currently, I have a total of 2.5GB worth of mp3s loaded on the SDHC card, and a couple of pictures (4 actually). MP3s play fine, but when I try to view the very first picture that the 750 lists on the thumbnail screen for pictures found on the SDHC card, the unit will shutoff.

At first i thought maybe the picture I uploaded was corrupted, as all the other pictures worked fine. So I deleted the 4, and replaced them. The same problem persisted. I then thought it might be the picture itself was somehow causing a problem, so I got the original, resized it for the nuvi screen, and replaced it. Still the unit would shutoff when I attempted to view it. So I made a 2nd copy of that picture, named it something else, and then tried it on the nuvi. This time, the nuvi changed the order of the thumbnail listing, and I was able to view both the original and the copy just fine. However, once again if I tried to view the very first picture in the nuvi thumbnail listing, the unit will shutdown. This did not occur when I was using a 256MB card, so I'm wondering if its a problem with the way it reads SDHC cards, a corrupt/problem SDHC card, or something else; user error or too many files/directories? Anyone else experience this problem?

BUGS

Yes! I had bugs also with my sdhc card.

But then I sprayed it with RAID, and that killed all the little bugs.

Another benefit is that now with the oil left on the card from spraying Raid, it slips in smoother now.

There was a post here

There was a post here recently regarding virus' or trojan's on new sd cards. I have not seen this but possibly you could look into that area...

4GB card?

Doesn't the 750 only support up to a 4GB card? Could this be the cause of the issue?

Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT, Nuvi 750, Nuvi 255LT

According to what I have

According to what I have read, the size limit has been removed, so any size sdhc card maybe used with nuvi's....

Edit I wonder if they will support the new sdxc cards? 2tb's of music... EEEkk.. shock

Possible Bug with 750

I also have a 750. My problem with pictures is a little bit different. All of my pictures are sized to match the screen size and, with few exceptions, display full screen. But only in the slide show mode. If I look at one picture only and select full screen, it only stays full screen for about 3 seconds and then reverts back to the smaller image with:

"Display at power on?" in the upper left corner

and

"Back" "Full Screen" and the up and down arrows at the bottom.

My SD card is a standard, 2GB SanDisk card.

My unit never shuts down.

I don't have a clue as to why it is doing what it is doing, but I wanted to welcome you to the site and compliment the step-wise methodology you used to both test the card and then to detail it for us. As I was reading, I would start to hypothesize a cause and you would immediately rule that out with your next sentence.

Good luck and perhaps another NYC member with an 8GB card could get together with you and try his card in your unit. I am pretty sure I've seen posts saying that a given model gps did not like a certain card that worked perfectly fine in other apperati. Two questions:
1.) If you choose Slide Show, does the unit still shutdown on the first picture?
2.) Are you an engineer?

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I ran the card through the

I ran the card through the normal tester built into XP, no problems found there. The only reason I even suspect the card, is that I never used this much capacity on it till this point, and the reader I got with it (was a combo deal with the Canon camera I purchased) fried itself within just a few minutes of being used, while the card was in it.

The picture comes up fine in the thumbnail view, so I know that it can be read from the card. I didn't even think of trying the slideshow as I never used it before, but all the pictures do work in slideshow mode, although there is a longer pause then normal before it shows that first picture from the SDHC card, and that first picture also only stays on screen for just shy of a second before it goes onto the next picture on the SDHC card. Choosing that first picture on the SDHC card directly from the thumbnail view still results in a wait before the sudden shutdown. Playing an MP3 in the background, the audio does not skip, stutter, or stop during the time after I've clicked on that first picture. The audio plays on like normal till the shutdown, so the unit doesn't appear to freeze.

And no, I'm not an engineer, but I've dealt with electronics and computers for many years and do all my diagnostic and maintenance on all my systems. Generally, I dont make post unless I can't figure out the problem myself, or find a solution through search engines.

Oh, I also stayed at a Holiday Inn once too.

MPegger.....

MPegger,

I have a 750 and use it similarly to you with a 4-gig SDHC card and don't experience any problems. I can play MP3's and do a slide show while navigating and also receiving traffic with a GTM-20 although I don't know what all this info might proove.

There probably ARE some differences in our setups. I only have about 12 jpgs loaded and they are in the JPEG folder of the 750 (not the card). The are also all very small (about 480 x 232) so the Nuvi can easily re-size them.

I've only got about 1 gig of MP3's on the card (238 songs spread over 66 folders.

I also have couple gig of software, top maps, and other junk on the card as well. The card has about 3.5 gig of data on it.

My 4 gig card is formatted for FAT-32.

If were guessing, I'd suspect (from what I've read) that the size of you card is not the problem but perhaps you've exceeded some data limit or violated some rule they haven told us about. For example, the Nuvi might not be very graceful when we:

1. exceed some max number of MP3's (which is ?)
2. exceed some number of folders in a directory structure someplace.
3. perhaps it has a problem resizing photos that are to large (howerver large that might be).

I don't have neve put a lot of faith in the robustness of Garmin firmware and nothing would surprise me.
