Nuvi 880 V4.30 displays terrain in map

I just updated my Nuvi880 to 4.30 and since then when I display the map in "track up" mode I get a green terrain map. (Green due to elevation, I guess.) This makes it a little tougher to read the text on the map.

I emailed Garmin and their response is below:

Quote:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I see your Nuvi is displaying terrain in the Track Up map view. This is a situation that was caused with the latest software update. It is actually something I have dealt with a couple times in the last week. Currently there is no fix available for this particular overlay issue. The information has
already been sent to our software engineers for a potential correction to be made.

In the meantime it might be a good idea to use the 3-D map view and it will display normally. I apologize for any inconvenience.

With Best Regards,

So there.

a temporary fix

Note that there -is- a temporary fix. You need to disable the DEM Basemap on the unit. To do so, connect your nuvi to the PC via USB cable and browse to the the nuvi drive. Disable the DEM Basemap by renaming x:/Garmin/gmapbmap.img to something like gmapbmap.img.disabled (this will remind you that it has been disabled by you). The next step is to power off the nuvi, then REMOVE THE BATTERY for about 30 seconds. The power switch on the 8x0 series does not actually power down the unit but only puts it into a "sleep mode". Removing the battery truly shuts down the unit and on the next power cycle will re-read the files needed by the nuvi OS. The unit seeing the basemap renamed will not load it and you should see your map being displayed normally.

When Garmin gets around to correcting the problem with the firmware, you can reenable the DEM basemap by renaming the file back to gmapbmap.img and again, power cycle the unit by removing, then replacing the battery.

a temporary fix

Dear Mr. Dorkus Nimrod:

Thanks for the "temporary fix" and very detailed instructions. I do have a question about it. With the map DIS-abled per your instructions, what map will the unit be using?

Could you please expand on the different type of maps and their uses?

Thank you,
PS: You have a great name, but I hope it is not on your birth certificate.

.

The unit will be using it's detailed map: City Navigator North America NT 2009 (or whatever version you have loaded on your unit).

The basemap is not really used for routing/navigation purposes at all on the unit, unless there is no detailed map on it and is only displayed/switched to when you're zoomed above (I believe) 8 miles or so. If you have no detailed maps on the unit, the basemap is used on it's own.
