Enough about the number of lock code digits already.

Ok, I've joined the ranks of using Garmin lock ... and a custom splash screen.

But as I selected my code, it just dawned on me ... there has been wide speculation about just how long it would take a thief to enter the "x" digit lock code combinations and permutations.

But, if we all hush about about how many digits are in the lock code ... thieves would have no idea how many digits to even enter.

Not knowing how many digits would significantly add to the number of tries a thief would have to use.

There is no indication on the lock code entry screen of how many digits to enter ... at least not on my 260w ... so if we all keep mum about the number of digits ... from this day forward ... thieves wouldn't be the to log onto POI Factory and be encouraged to try to enter the codes.

So ... use the Garmin lock feature ... and keep mum about the numbers of digits used to unlock the unit.

Now, I realize that by their very natures, thieves aren't the brightest group of people .... but it's not beyond the pale that some young punk would have some computer skills.

Lets keep them guessing ... or atleast don't give them some advice or encouragement on how long it would take them to break the code.

That info is available on

That info is available on line, true a thief may not have access to the internet, but then he wouldn't be here either... shock

Yep

And a great source for that information is Garmin's website in the form of user's manuals.

I'd be more in favor for some type of registration like my golf gpsr. If I don't pay for my service they cut the signal.

I'm not suggesting a paid subscription but perhaps in the future you'll be able to report a gpsr as stolen and the signal will be disabled.

Cut off signal??

Cut off what signal? I don't think my Garmin gets any kind of signal from Garmin. I don't think the government will shut down the whole GPS system because someone didn't pay their bill.

Not the same

Your SkyCaddie signal is tied to your account. The GPSr receives an open signal and doesn't have to be linked to the service.

Sorry cbwatts, your logic is flawed>>>

you, apparently, assume a thief to be stupid because he/she is a criminal. The number of digits is readily accessible...once they know that all they do is start at 000, 001, 002...won't take long at all, unfortunately sad

Access Code

Hi,

I know on my unit as soon as you put in the correct amount of digits the unit will allow you to select next or enter.

So the Garmin unit tells you how many digits are required.

Missing the point

Yes, the thief wont be able to use the GPS he stole from you, but why does that matter? Your GPS is still stolen, and he won't be returning it to you because he can't use it.

I know what you're thinking...gee, if every potential thief knew that he wouldn't be able to use it if he stole it. If only our education system worked that well. We couldn't even get folks to switch to digital TV! LOL....
