Tied customer base

I agree, with all the above points. I'm still in two minds about returning the 760 I have, and if I do keep it but the bugs aren't fixed then that's it for Garmin as far as I'm concerned, and I don't see myself ever paying "new release" prices for a GPS from anyone. I've always figured the best bang for the buck is two levels down from the "bleeding edge" ('cos what you bleed there is money), but if stuff is still buggy at that stage then it doesn't make any sense to buy just released beta tester units at the price of a decent PC.

I think they're dropping the ball on the lifetime map updates, instead of using them to tie customers to their products they're generating responses similar to yours (and mine smile)

Recent 750 & 780 Purchase...

Yep... I'm not real impressed with this news...

780 support

My 780 seems to be left off the list for anything at the Garmin site, I can't find it listed, They stop at the 760, This discontinuance of the Nuvi's will make my 780 be my last garmin

I have a 770 so I guess

I have a 770 so I guess that's not on the list as yet. It is really disappointing for a company to be seemingly doing this on purpose. I guess if they discontinue it they won't support it? They keep this up and they will lose customer's for sure. Not sure why they would want to do this. I can see discontinuing production of the unit for a different model and just not making that model any more. But if they discontinue service or updates, that is something they should not do. One dissatisfied customer is worth about a thousand.

Garmin still going to support all discontinued units.

I don't think it should be your last Garmin, after all they still support discontinued models. I do however think there is much credence to the argument to wait at least 6 months after a model is released to consider purchasing it (especially top of the line models). Six months is a good window to have many early bugs worked out and the price should have dropped significantly by then. This way you will have a fairly mature product at a reasonable price (maybe 50% less than the price of its initial release).
It's all about being an intelligent/informed consumer getting the most bang for your buck.

Looks like Garmin has discontinued more nuvi models, those being the 2x0w and the 7x0 units.

I haven't even had my 760 for year and now it's a has been in the electronics world. This does not mean that they will stop supporting the unit.

Thanks for the news.

Simple Economics

I am looking at a 760 to buy and after reading the above, I checked amazon and the price went up from $220 to $224 today. What gives? You would think that it would go down.

Supply & Demand:

supply shrinkage + demand increase = price increase

Yep! And we all know. . .

I contacted Garmin and asked them about the lifetime maps before I signed up. Their written answer to me was that as long as the GPS unit is operating the unit would be qualified to continue to get the lifetime map updates. They also said there was no time limit and even if they needed to replace the unit instead of repairing it the lifetime maps would transfer to the replacement unit.

I question the accuracy of their email to you. Because the nuMaps terms and limitations state:

If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately), you will receive up to four (4) map Data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for one (1) compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map Data from NAVTEQ, whichever is shorter.

Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product.

Yep! And we all know that Garmin and their customer service rep's are big sticklers on their policies!

The 200 series was introduced almost 2 years ago

The 200 series was introduced almost 2 years ago and it's replacement series almost 6 months ago so no surprise that Garmin is no longer producing the 200 series any longer.

Garmin explained to me what they are referring to in the quote "until your product’s useful life expires" is a GPS unit that no longer continues to function as a working GPS and it has nothing to do in any way with any time limit of any kind.

If you purchase a new replacement GPS unit or sell or give the unit away you cannot transfer the lifetime maps but if you were to send the unit in for repair and Garmin replaces it instead of repairing it the lifetime maps will be transferred to the replacement unit.

discontinued models

As long as Garmin continues to support the discontinued model, I don't have a problem with it. It is disconcerting that it happens so quickly though.

Exactly

My 660 still works very well for me and until they come out with a feature that just knocks my socks off, I'll be hanging onto it.

I have the 660 and it is a great unit..and seeing the Tests at GPS magazine the 660 has a better signal than the 760. I did just buy a 760...got mine for 211 at amazon..it has its pluses. It is thinner..and has routes...

I've seen other models that have some way cool features but when you get down to it, the 660 really does quite a bit. The one feature that I miss is being able to make custom routes but I'm not willing to purchase another unit for that feature. I'll probably do the 2010 may update on the unit when it comes out and then sit tight with the unit till something much better comes along. As my wife ALWAYS REMINDS ME, "Money doesn't grow on trees"!

But I tell her, the paper does! (LOL) And so much for talking with her for the next week! SLAP....OUCH! (LOL)
