Nuvi 765T - Transfer a route from a PC to the GPS

I've had my 765T for 2 days. Previously, I used an old Garmin eMap with Mapsource and Microsoft Streets and Trips.

What's the best way to transfer a route to the GPS?

I've read that Mapsource does not do it and Microsoft Streets and Trips is incompatible.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

you can try MapQuest...

you can enter your starting and ending locations, and it will plot the route...but then you can click and drag the route to a road you prefer...but many times when I have used it, my 765T recalculates the route, and ignores the roads I have chosen. sad

You need Garmin's MapSource

You need Garmin's MapSource program. They will send it to you for a nominal shipping fee of around $10 if you call customer service and ask for it.

I have a very old copy of

I have a very old copy of Mapsource v5.0. If I update it to v6.15.3 would that be ok? What would I stand to gain by spending the $10?

Maps also

I believe johnc meant to suggest along with MapSource you'll also need North America NT 2009 maps. If you don't have a copy (i.e. DVD), Garmin may charge you $10 to send you one.

And yes, just upgrade your MapSource to the current version. FREE

Don't forget to import the routes after uploading to the GPS. I wasn't used to having to do this step and I couldn't figure out why the wife's 760 wouldn't take routes.

Do you also have a Map Upgrade file or disc for your Nuvi?

Do you also have a Map Upgrade file for your Nuvi? If so, you will be all set.

MapSource and your Nuvi should be using the same version of maps. I found out the hard way when I had MapSource with 2009 maps and a Nuvi with 2008 maps. MapSource laid out routes using roads that were present on the 2009 maps that did not exist in the Nuvi's 2008 maps. It crashed when it hit those spots.

If you have an older version of MapSource you can install it and then check for updates in the help menu. It will download the latest version.

If you also have a 2009 map update file or DVD, run the map updater. It will copy the newer maps to your MapSource folder. You cannot download the map data from your Nuvi into MapSource.

If you do not have a map update file or DVD, it would probably be easier to get the DVD from Garmin. It will have the latest version of MapSource as well as a copy of the map data. It will install them together.

Mapquest

When I plan a trip in Mapquest, I enter my starting location, then I add a 2nd location on the route I want to take, then add a 3rd location on my route, etc. and end with my final location. You can view the map, then drag anything that's not ON route to the one you want, then send it to your GPS. Then, you have to import it and it will be saved in your custom routes. Also, before I send it to the GPS, I save the file with a name that is familiar to me so I can find it easily. Hope this helps!
