What's it Worth??

I am thinking of selling my Nuvi 255W to upgrade to a Nuvi 765T. I paid $220.00 from Amazom last Oct. I also bought a Garmin AC Charger for $17.00. I do know that the price has come down. I want to be fair in selling it. I have found many 350,200, and 260's for sale, but not any of the XX5 series. How much do you think that I should ask for it. I will be using Craig's List and the local Newspaper.

Well....

If it were me I'd start out at $120 but be willing to take $95.

This advice of course is worth $.02

I sold my nuvi 250 recently...

I advertised it locally for $125 and sold it for $100. This was a nuvi 250, not a 250W. I am, however, in Canada and the price was in Canadian dollars.

Hope this helps!

Used nuvi 255W

On Ebay, there are a bunch of refurbished units selling for around $169. There is one used one in good working condition with about an hour left to go with 8 bids that's up to $109.50. It includes the power cord, but no mount or manual.

The used ones on Amazon right now start at $210 + shipping, which is more than a new one direct from Amazon. I don't know how all these sellers on Ebay and Amazon make due when they're asking much more than you can buy from a reputable online store for.

Amazon

grush,

I'm seeing new 255W's on Amazon for $193.84 including shipping.

Everything loses value when it's used

I thought that what it was worth, (wishihg for more) but I was thinking around $125. with the AC Charger. Should I keep the AC charger and use it on my new 765T. Without the charger start at $115.00 or BO?

Hard to tell on the AC adapter. It actually may make the deal a little more attractive with it.

On the other hand I found the adapter to be just about worthless when I purchased it for the wife's 760. We've had her unit 5 months and I still have yet to use it. I found the DC adapter or USB cable works for me keep it charged.

If you find it useful and would end up buying another if you sold it, I'd keep it.

Get..

Get how much you can get. But obviously within reason.

I buy and sell used GPS's all the time

I use Craigs list and have real good luck with that service, at least you don't have to pay fees on what you sell or buy.

Save the power supply for your next GPS if it fit's, just be sure what you buy is really what you want.

I agree, Craigslist is the

I agree, Craigslist is the only way to go. If you don't sell it on there for 125 then raise it 130. You never know.

used value

New Nuvi 255s are selling on eBay without the charger, for $140-170 including shipping. (ALWAYS look at COMPLETED sales, not auctions with any time remaining, because many items like this bid up sharply right at the end).

Used Nuvi 255s without the charger are selling for about $100-$150 including shipping on eBay, more than a few at the higher end, though, even though new ones (admittedly, from unauthorized dealers) are selling for less.

I think $130 with no shipping for your almost new unit is fair, though you might get $10-20 more on eBay with luck. The no-fee feature of craigslist makes it attractive, though. But I'd want to exchange the GPS for cash (look at the bills carefully) in a public place, not my home. Electronic gizmos attract fraud in places like eBay and craigslist.

Worth ?

Well from an old farmer - it is only worth what someone else will pay for it. And unfortunately, most of my toys are worth more to me than what others have wanted to spend. My family thinks I maintain a museum of boat anchor electronics....

Seriously - I think that $125 is fair. You have to think about what is your bottom dollar, and then ask about $15 - $20 more so you can come down and still sleep at night.

We have been selling stuff online for a while with no bad apples yet, a couple worms... But here is something we have done to help. When they say they are going to buy, give them a set amount of time to come get it or meet. Tell them that after that it is open to other offers. If they are serious they will show up and get it, and if they don't I don't feel bad about selling it to someone else. Usually I don't like to go over 24 hrs, but it depends on the product and if I am delivering or not.

Good advice for craigslist

This is very good advice, because No-Shows are a time-wasting problem with some craigslist buyers.

255W/Amazon

Right you are! I was just pointing out the the used ones on Amazon are for some reason selling for more than new, which seems to be fairly common sometimes on Amazon, Ebay, etc.

When used sells for more than new

I noticed the same phenomenon when I was checking the value of 255s on eBay, and though I didn't look at it more closely to figure out why it happened in individual auctions, I do know two reasons it happens generally.

Feedback is one. In many cases, the new units like this on eBay are sold by large-volume sellers. Some of them may have, say, 10,000 feedbacks, 96% positive, which to an eBay newbie sounds great, but is a sign of problems. And then you check the comments for that seller and you see stuff like: "Said GPS was 'new', but it's seen heavy use & doesn't work. Ignoring my emails." On the other hand, you can have a very lightly used GPS sold by a private seller with 300 positive feedbacks, 100% satisfied, and he offers a plausible reason about why he's selling, and allows returns if you're not satisfied when you get it. To experienced eBay buyers, the second one's the better deal and can be bid higher.

The second reason this happens is that some buyers don't check values in completed auctions before bidding, get caught up in the emotion of the auction, and don't realize that they're bidding too high.

re: When Used Sells For More Than New

I do think people get caught up in these auctions. They are kinda addicting, but I always check prices carefully before I bid. I have gotten a lot of PS3 game bargains recently.

But I do notice that certain things are being listed and sold for way too much.

Check out "Buzz Quiz Tv", a PS3 quiz game that gets decent but not great ratings on the game sites. Sells for $56.99 including shipping on Amazon brand new. Some of the Buy It Now prices are like $80+. I don't know who would buy at that price. Some of the auctions for the used ones are also going for higher than Amazon.

Another thing on Ebay is Xbox Point Cards, PS3 prepaid cards, etc. are going for higher the face value. The only thing I can figure out is these people need to buy them on PayPal where the funds can be deducted from your checking account because they don't have a credit card.

There's bargains to be found in GPSr's on the site but a lot of prices are overly high also.

$125

plus shipping.

Sold It

Thanks to all for your imput. I put it on Craigslist for $110.00 and sold it for $100.00. I did not sell the AC charger (Thanks to BobDee and azjeffh, I forgot that it would work on my Wife's 260). I thought that I wanted a 765T, but the cost is around $425.00. The reason I wanted to upgrade is to get Bluetooth. I have no need for traffic alerts. The 265WT (around $240.00)seems to be weak on its Bluetooth and is having problems with the 2009.1 maps. Its funny that the best review for bluetooth was Nuvi 760 ($220.00). It looks like its my best bet for an all in one GPS and Bluetooth. I just don't like going backwards.

If you have an ebay account,

If you have an ebay account, you can look up pasted auctions and see what price the units have sold for.
