If you got your Garmin for Christmas

If you got your garmin for Christmas
You need to request a map update now.
I ask them for an update and because I am two weeks alter in asking they said no way.
Apparently when you acquire satellites for first time you also send a signal to Garmin.
So they know actually when it was first used.
Below is my e-mail from them and a link explaining their policy.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Garmin does offer a one time free mapping update to those that register thier device within 60 days of first use. Since it has past that time by two weeks we will not offer a one time free update.

Our NuMaps Garuntee policy clearly outlines this if you would like further details:

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Garmin isn't sent a signal...

The date/time stamp is written to memory in the unit and this is queried when you register the unit. So a signal isn't "sent", you send the info when you register.

Just to be clear...
The GPS does NOT send any signals to Garmin when you first use it. What it does is store the date and time in memory and the WebUpdater (which they FORCE you to use to register) gets the info from the GPS at that time.

Just another silly Garmin ploy disguised in their unit registration process. Consider, If you bought the GPS as a gift for someone in Nov or early Dec for Christmas and took it out of the box, and tried it to make sure it was not going to be DOA, you've screwed youself out of some time in that 60 day Map update policy. But you should act soon... as they say "time is of the essence" !

Much Discussed

Islander,

I see you've been a forum member for about ten-weeks so you must have missed all the earlier discussion. This thread will get you caught up: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/20236

Use the 'search' utility to hunt up other threads/messages pertaining to the 60 day map update guarantee. Also look for Numaps.

As another forum member has already (rightly) POInted out (see what I did there? ) Your GPS doesn't send a signal to Garmin. It stores information about the first satellite acquisition. When you register the unit or connect to Garmin to try and download a map the website looks for that information. If it's outside the 60 day window you simply can't get the download but you 'can' still register the unit (advisable in case warranty service is needed).

A quick bit of history. The 60 day map update policy has been in effect a long time. Garmin users, at one time, just avoided registering their GPS for a year or until an update came along. Those users were brazen enough to post the procedure, Garmin got wise so developed the 'first sat contact' log.

Cheers wink

Update

I got my Garmin for Christmas. Registered it on 12/28, first sattelite acquisition on 12/29/08

I got a map update on Feb. 4, 2009, well within the 60 days. It took a long time to upload the program from Garmin to finally unlock the new map, but I got it!

John,
Yes I am a newbie, and did miss that tread, thanks.
Saw a lot of other discussion with regards to the free maps
and there did seem to be a lot of misinformation, as well.
My post however was a warning to those that had just got their units.
If it is a help to just one person, I will be happy.

Register

It when you register your unit or update the software from their site that they will know. I used my unit for 10 month before I register mine. I got my cd map update after I register it. Just a though.

That trick no longer works. Read the earlier posts, they explain Garmin's new policy. Garmin can now tell when you activated the unit so waiting to register has no benefit.

Forcing you to use the webupdater must be something new. All three GPSrs I have bought from Garmin I registered by phone and I don't remember giving them a purchase date.
