Garmin 760 'dead'????

GPS was fine this AM, on to work, powered off when I turned my car off at work. This afternoon -- NADA. Replugged cord in (green light glows so it's getting power), tried plugging in to computer w/USB cord -- NADA. Switched off/on about a dozen times --- NADA. Tried on battery only -- NADA.

Any ideas before I call Garmin? Unit is 9 months old. No downloads in the last couple of months, except to update red light cameras.

These strange and random

These strange and random shut downs affect the 750 too. I had the exact same thing happen with a 750 I was playing with.

Mysteriously it came back to life a little while later.

Could be maybe something is silently running in the GPS even when it appears off, and later when you try to turn it on it will respond.

I suggest charging it for a while and then trying to turn it on again.

Charge with the computer

Many people have not been able to charge a dead nuvi from the cars power port. Also I have read that the rear usb ports on a computer may put out more juice than ones on the front... If it was me I'd leave it charging over night and if I didn't get any results call Garmin in the morning..

dead 760

similar thing happened to mine while I was in Europe. Fortunatelly it was the last night before my flight back. Somehow the battery got totally discharged. Could be a short when plugging it in or something like that. After 24 hours I charged it and it was back.

Same thing

Same thing with mine. Wouldn't boot in car, usb or power switch and had worked fine 30 minutes before. I tried for several hours off and on. Left it plugged into the computer for about three hours and then tried the switch again and it worked. That was several weeks ago and it has never done it again.

Same here

Had a 760 for about a month. Full battery charge and had just loaded some things onto it - and then no boot. Not on the computer, not on the car charger, not on the battery (which I know was mostly full because I had just unhooked it from the computer a few minutes earlier and noticed that the meter read full). I even took the back off and unhooked the battery and reconnected it - nada.

Had to send it back to Amazon for exchange (thank you
Amazon for the extended xmas returns).

Exchanged it for a 265wt.

Once prior to this incident I had it continuously shutting down with a SD card in the slot. Twice it locked up and required a reset (8 seconds hold the power switch to the left). One of these was related to SD card, one not.

I think the 760s just have a bunch of lemons amongst them.

P.S. the 265wt doesn't have the powered windshield mount. You need to plug the cord into the back of it every time. I really miss that powered windshield mount. C'est la vie.

Mine is a 750 which is a 760 without Bluetooth. I found out by accident that if you turn the GPS off using the switch on the unit while it has external power applied, it doesn't really turn off. The screen will go dark and if you look close it will tell you that it is charging but the unit is still powered on.

You can verify this by turning the unit off using the power switch on the unit while leaving external power applied. Wait about 5 minutes and then turn the unit back on. It will power up immediately with the satellite bar indicating good signal. Then unplug the external power and turn the unit off. Wait 5 minutes and turn the unit back on. It will go through it's normal boot routine, loading maps, etc. The bad part is that if you turn the unit off and then disconnect external power, it will continue to run on the battery until the battery is discharged.

Leave the unit hooked up to external power for 4 to 6 hours and, if a dead battery is your problem, it should work fine.

had it fail the same way 30

had it fail the same way 30 days into unit ownership. returned it. im done with garmin units for the forseeable future anyway.
i switched to my samsung smartphone with garmin mobile XT which has worked out surprisingly well. v happy.

power problem 760

try resetting the garmin. There is a small hole in which you must insert something like end of paper clip to rest. Advice was from Garmin tech support
Worked for me. But battery life has gone from over 3 hours to under 1 hour.
