Catagorizing POI's

I have many POI's on my Garmin 755T, but they are all under the heading of Custom POI's. You can only search for one of the POI's or all of them at once. Is there a way of placing groups together under common headings? When I'm looking for fuel, I want all the fuel stops but not the resturants and other POI's I have.

I tried making folders but the 755T seems to ignore them. Any help would be appreciated, if it's possible to do this.

Thanks.

Good Question

I also would like to know if it is better to store them on an SD card or the unit???
What are the advantages of each??

Catagorizing POI's

I guess it depends on how much memory you have left in the unit. When loaded onto the card the unit asks if you want to transfer them to the unit, in case the card is removed or erased. As long as there is enough memory in the unit, I prefer the POI's stored there rather than on the card. Speed is a factor as well, if you have a slow card, the response to the searches may be slowed down.

You can put them in folders

I'm not sure this will solve your problem but if you have a folder "my pois" and in that folder put sub-folders i.e.:

My pois>
>Fuel Stops
>Restaurants
>Banks
>etc...

You can then put the fuel stop pois in that folder, Restaurants in the approiate folder etc...

Then when you go to your custom poi's you will have a choice of Fuel stops, Restaurants, Banks, etc..

edit: BTW you can only have one level of sub-folders, if you make sub-sub-folders they will not load.. There has been much discusion regarding this and Motorcycle Mama has written much on the subject..

POI Categories

I load my custom POIs to the main nuvi unit because the resulting file is so small. I put my mp3 music files on the SD card.

There are many topics on how to group and organize POI files. It is done by creating folder and file groupings on your PC before running POI Loader.

Here is one example:

Yes, folders are the way to go

I agree. Use folders. When you pull up a folder, you can see each file individually, or "all categories" for all files combined.

For example, if in the "Restaurants" folder, you have one file for McDonald's and another for Burger King, you can bring up either or both. If both, you will get all McDonald's and Burger King restaurants shown together in order of closest distance to where you are currently.

Folders are the trick!

I concur with the above posters.

Categorize by folders on your pc and when you load via poiloader, voila! It's like magic!

I currently have 13 categories. Also, my 680 has a poi file limit within the category. IIRC, I thinks it maxes at 37 poi files. Not sure if this applies to all nuvi class devices.

Good info to know

This seems to be good info to know. I was woundering how to add catagories to Custom POI's. I will have to try the folders.

Is there a limit to the

Is there a limit to the number of subfolders you can have?

I sort my custom POIs into subfolders, but I'm always concerned that the next subfolder may be one too many.

Limit to folders?

I don't think so. I have about 10 or so folders (categories).

FWIW, it will impact the performance of your gps device when perusing the poi categories. I noticed this when adding more poi folders.

Similar to having too many folders on your pc desktop, bogs down the performance.

Folder (and file) limits are explained here:
