Peel open a nuvi 780 to replace the battery?

I’ve got a DOA nuvi 780 that I bought on eBay. It works fine while plugged into car or computer but the internal battery only holds a charge for about 15 minutes. So I guess it’s not really DOA but it needs a heart transplant. Or maybe the correct analogy is a FAT transplant since the body uses fat to store energy like a battery. Kind of a gross analogy! A Chubby Nuvi???
Has anyone photoed the inside of a 7xx model? I’ve ordered a replacement battery and some tiny torx tools. The battery has a plug so it shouldn’t require any soldering. The case has 2 torx screws in the back so I’m guessing that’s the way to get the case apart. But it’s a little like performing brain surgery with a blindfold. Or a reverse liposuction to stay with the gross analogy.
I would feel a LOT more comfortable if someone out there in the ether waves has a pic of one of these things opened and maybe some words of advice on the best way to perform this surgery.
Any help GREATLY appreciated…
thanks,
Bob
Opening a Nuvi
Here's something I came across
Flip up your antenna, at the very top you will see two screws, (These are T-5 Torx) remove them.
Next be very careful when you open the top cover! The ribbon cable for the antenna comes through the bottom corner
(I think it is on the right looking at the unit.)
Next focus on the left bottom corner, there is a black barrel that holds the antenna to the unit
and also provides the clicking steps you get when positioning the antenna.
There should be a slit for a screw driver inboard about 3MM Put your screw driver there and pull to the right.
Now you can lift the antenna box free. (NOT THE ENTIRE UNIT, THE RIBBON CABLE IS STILL ATTACHED.)
Now at the top of the unit you will see two more T-5's under the antenna pivot area.
You should be able to pry the unit open once these are removed. Still you must be careful the touch panel,
speaker cable, power cable and one more cable is still attached. That one more cable you will see right away,
it is red and black and you can remove it and fold the two halves over with the others still attached.
After removing the final three which are all ribbon cables. Also don't forget the antenna cable,
which once removed can be pulled through the half of the unit it is attached to.
After seperating the halves you have the touch screen removed. You have two more phillips screws which
removes the "motherboard so to speak."
wrong unit ....
Here's something I came across
Flip up your antenna .....
the direction are from the older 3xx series with the flip up antenna .... the 7xx has the built-in antenna
carefully
I would feel a LOT more comfortable if someone out there ...[had] some words of advice on the best way to perform this surgery.
CAREFULLY!

Can you return the unit. I am thinking that is why it was for sale on ebay.

check the warranty
I suggest check the warranty before you open it. Chances are, you can get help from Garmin even if you bought from eBay.
HOLY COW JERRY JACKSONVILLE!!!
Jerry - The youtube video that you found is EXACTLY the info I need about battery replacement for the nuvi 780. I don’t know how you found it but thanks a bunch! Now I know what to expect when I open the case.

Thanks to all of you for the help and advice. I should have been more specific about the eBay purchase. I actually bought a DOA nuvi 780 as part of a 2 GPS package deal on eBay. I got a working 750 and a DOA 780 for one low – low price of $267.60. Well, not THAT low a price but I was satisfied. The seller said that the 780 wouldn’t hold a charge. I gambled that it was a bad battery. I knew that Garmin would not honor a warranty. Quote from the Garmin website:
“Procedure for Claims Under Non-Aviation Limited Warranties
To obtain warranty service, an original or copy of the sales receipt from the original retailer is required. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification, and Garmin will not replace missing components from any package purchased through an online auction. Garmin retains the exclusive right to either repair or replace the unit with a "newly-overhauled" (NOH) unit or new unit at its sole discretion. The same policy shall apply to software.”
The 780 works fine on the car MSN charger. It just won't stay operating on it's own for more than 20 minutes. I’ve ordered a new battery and a set of torx tools for $16.00. I figure I’ve gambled about $75.00 total on the 780 - $67.60 extra for tha pair plus $16.00. If the battery replacement works, I’ll put the 750 back on eBay and, hopefully, end up with a functioning 780 WITH the MSN receiver for less than a hundred bucks!
Of course, I STILL haven’t been able to sell that old New York city bridge that I bought last year!!!

nuvi battery & torx tools on eBay
Hi Bobby,
I bought the battery and a set of torx tools from mega.battery on eBay. I've received the battery but the tools haven't arrived yet. I checked for the vendor on eBay but he is no longer an active member. ULP!
Now I'm a little worried. - no torx tool to peel with and, for all I know, the battery is filled with Jello!!
. I won't give this vendor a bad rating yet because the 2 purchases were being sent separately direct from Hong Kong. The tools might still be in transit.
The battey was $10.00 plus $6.00 shipping so the real cost was $16.00. MY BAD!
You can do an eBay search for "Garmin 750 battery". Be sure to check the title and description box to turn up what's available. There's one listed today for $17.50 including shipping. Radio Shack has one listed for about $22.00. + ship on their web site.
regards,
Bob

Thanks for the info....I am not a big ebay fan for this type of product. I will check the Radio Shack site for future reference. Best of luck and let us know if everything works out ok.

Thanks for the link. As I review the various Garmin LiPo batteries, I see about three models. Sadly, on the website, none seem to indicate that they're compatible with any of the nuvi 7x0 (or 7x5, for that matter) series GPS units. Does anyone know if any of the batteries will work with a nuvi 750?

thanks for the link, they have new batteries for the 660 also. I even found a battery for my laptop and it had a better price than any where else.

Has anyone here done this battery replacement?
Upon inspecting the Torx screws on my 760, I'd swear I see that center pin which means we need the T5 security driver, not a conventional T5 driver. I can't tell for sure.
(2) Nuvi 1450LMT + 3597LMTHD + 2557LMT + DS61LMT-S Boston MA
.
It's a standard Torx T5 (no center pin or non "Tamper Resistant). AFAIK, the smallest Torx head that is "tamper-resistant" is a T7. See:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#pin-in-torx-keys/=h1u1n
Then advance to the next catalog page.
