Proximity Points

I am pretty new to POIs. if i install POIs using the POI loader in express install mode, will the sound files play when i am near a POI? or do i need to manualy set them to play using the manual mode?
I did set Proximity point alerts to ON on my GPS unit.

I have The Nuvi 660.

Thanks

.

No alert will play for a given POI file unless you set an alert. You typically do that by either running POI Loader in manual mode or using one of the keywords in the filename. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764 .

Proximity

Loading as a regular POI will only alert if you are on the road that the POI is on. A proximity will alert when you are near, regardless if you are on the same road or not.

Is this a typo?
...a TourGuide alert behaves that way.

It depends on how the poi is named..

Red-light cameras and speed camera poi's will alert you when you load them in express mode. If poi's have the word "speed" or "red-light" in their name (these are two of several) you will get an alert when loaded using the express mode. Others you have set them using manual mode...

However

As Phil stated above, unless you make them TourGuide files you will still only get a Proximity Alert when the POI coordinates are within 50-75 feet
of the roadway you are travelling.

Distance Adjust?

I just wondered if the Proximity Alert distance can be adjusted in any way?

I'm thinking in particular about the Starbucks coffee POI file.

If you only get an alert at 50 feet, you would miss any that were just down a side street.

Paul

If you re-read what the post says, what it is saying that you will get an alert if the Custom POI location is within 50 feet of the roadway itself.

The alert will occur at the distance prescribed by the alert (either proximity or speed). The alert will not occur at 50 feet unless you set a 50 foot proximity alert.

Yes, the standard proximity alert is of the Along-the-Route variety (the specific street you are on or will be on if you are being routed). If you want a radial alert, a TourGuide is the solution.

Hi there,

I've been reading up on this, and my guess is if I rename the Starbucks.csv file to:-

Starbucks_TourGuide_124.csv +

I will get an alert when I get within 1.25 miles of a Starbucks.

(Is there supposed to be a space between the csv and the +)

The other post I looked at implied I would need an .mp3 file also, is this essential?

Also, is there any way I can test that it works, (bearing in mind the file is for Starbucks in the USA and I live in England) so I can find Starbucks when I holiday in Florida later this year.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Paul

no plus

paul_richardson wrote:

I don't believe there is a space, and I don't believe there is really a + either. Just use the .csv extension at the end of the name.

Just make it Starbucks

Just make it Starbucks TourGuide 124.csv make sure you have space between Starbucks and TourGuide and TourGuide and 124 or is will not work.No +. You can't use mp3 for your gps unit but you can use wav file.If you don't use the wav file it will work but you will get the bong alert. This is what it should look like.If you need info on the wav file let me know.

Starbucks TourGuide 124.csv
Starbucks TourGuide 124.wav

Redlight mp3 plays coming AND going

Hi gang,

On a related but slightly different proximity method, I started experimenting a little with the various types of alerts. The one I like best is the My_Home_Redlight.csv/bmp/mp3 combo that I set up. A little green house shows up on the screen and "Home, Home On the Range" plays when I get within 2 blocks of home. What I don't understand is the fact that the mp3 plays a SECOND time when I get within about 75 yds. of the house. I guess nuvi knows that I'm REALLY happy to be coming home.
An even stranger event occurred for the first time today. I started the car, turned on the 760, selected 'Work' from my favorites (well, it's not really my favorite but that's where I had to store it wink), backed out of the driveway, and headed down the street. Within 75 yds, "Home, Home..." started playing AS I WAS LEAVING HOME????? Maybe I'm psychically bonded to the nuvi and it knew that I really didn't want to go to work that day.
It's acting as if any time I cross some invisible boundary, whether navigating toward home or away from home, it' going to play Mt_Home_Redlight.mp3.
is this normal? Inquiring minds want to know!!

I would say its normal. My 660 does the same thing with csv/bmp/mp3 custom POI setups.

The Nuvi doesn't know if you are coming or going. All it knows is that you reached the "electronic fence" you set up around a location, so it triggers the alert.

Any thoughts about posting the Home,Home On The Range for the sounds files on site?

I Don't Understand That Behavior Either

BobHastings wrote:

Proximity alerts should trigger ONLY when you are on (or your route includes) the same street as the POI is on, AND heading in the direction of the POI. The gps knows whether you are approaching or departing from a POI. Whenever I approach a redlight POI, the alerts stop immediately upon passing through the intersection.

I could see this behavior happening if your gps is still locking onto satellites, accuracy is still low, and while traveling at low speed, the gps gets a couple readings that make it think you are going the other way for a second or two. Sometimes at a stoplight you might see the vehicle icon turning on the screen as consecutive readings lead the gps to think you are spinning around.

If this behavior is exhibited for all proximity POIs, something is wrong. Are you certain that when originally setting up and testing the POI you didn't place a test point further up the road?

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for the info, and for taking the time to check what unit I am using.
Unfortunately, I typed it in wrong, I actually have a Nuvi 310.
Does this mean I can use MP3's?
I do know that it has an MP3 player built in, but I'm not sure if this means I can use MP3 sound files.

Paul

Hi again Charlie,

Sorry to be a pain, but I have another question for you if you don't mind.

I know that I can load multiple POI files into my Nuvi, but can I have multiple TourGuide files all running at the same time and all announcing when I get close by?

Regards,

Paul.
