Alphabetical list of POI's

LOVE THIS SITE... I've downloaded a couple campground files and it works great; however, the files are just randomly placed in the Garmin Custom POI's Screen. I've sorted them by alphabetical order on the computer but the Garmin still just lists them willie-nilly... is there anyway to make them list in order: ie: Colorado Campgrounds, Kansas Campgrounds, Texas Campgrounds????

I think you will find that it list the 50 closest to your current location.

You would have to break down the file in to multiple files.

I'm assuming your taking about states and not nearest to your location.

One way, create a main folder (Campgrounds) and subfolders (For Each State). Direct POIloader to the Main folder (Campgrounds), it will find the subfolder files. After loading change the file poi.gpi to campgrounds.gpi. Should come up in alphabetical order.

Thanks for the help. It's

Thanks for the help. It's not when I pull up "locations" it's when I pull up "categries". Example: I downloaded the Target POI database and the Wal-Mart database and US Parks and Campgrounds database. When I go to Custom POI's, it list Wal-Mart, Target and US Parks in that order... where Target should be the first one listed alphabetically, does that make sense? Thanks.

If you are using the

If you are using the subfolder format when you hit custom pois they should show alphabetically. One poster who used the renaming method for certain files so that he wouldn't have to update all the time.Reported that when ever doing a update they would not show alphabetically after the update.

Also

On the C530, numbers sort first, capitals second, small letters are last.

I have also found a strange occurrence when using different folders. It seems that if there are more than 4 items in the folder, if you down arrow | up arrow | down arrow; the last item disappears. Still trying to figure that one out....

Hey... the "sub-folder"

Hey... the "sub-folder" method worked, they are in ALFA order. Now...is there a way to create "categories". So when I got to Custom POI I see, SHOPPING, CAMPING, STATE PARKS, the under each of those I would see SHOPPING-Target & Walmart and CAMPING-Campgrounds and STATE PARKS-KS State fishing lake...???

Menu - Categories

I'm guessing there's a limit to how many menus and sub-menu's you can create in this little machine.

You probably have to do this

You probably have to do this with folders. In other words:

Shopping Target
Shopping Walmart
Shopping Walgreens

Once you get done to the list of POI's it put them in order of distance or closest to you.

Or create one subfolder named shopping and then put the stores in it, but then they wouldn't necessarily be alphabetical on the display.

They will be alphabetical on the display as long as you upload all of the shopping folder in the same upload (which I think you have to do) and all store names start with upper case letters. Any store that starts with a lower case letter will come after the last upper case store. From there you can either pick "all shopping" or an individual chain. Once you do that you'll see them like you see any POI's, by proximity.

If you upload everything in your shopping folder and the use the POI.gpi trick to keep from having to reload the shopping stores when you upload other POIs then shopping may not show up in alphabetical order with other categories, but in my experience the contents of shopping will still be sorted properly (except for the upper case and lower case issue).

Are you sure you have an "All Shopping" option under your custo-POIs? I think you are confusing the search for built-in POIs.

Here's the method of categorizing as provided by our own Motorcycle Moma:

Folders/files on your computer --

> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.

In this example, IHOP and National Parks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.

Here are some screenshots of what it would look like.

This is a shot of the folder and files on my computer.

This is how the first level shows up on my Zumo.

When I select the National Parks category, this is what I get.

Then if I select National Monuments, I get this.

Well, I don't have a Shopping category, the person I was responding to does. But I do have a "Stores" category and a "Restaurants" category. Under those all of the individual categories are indeed alphabetical (with the exception of the upper case / lower case issue). But you are correct the top label would not be "All Shopping", it is "All Categories", but it would mean All Shopping POIs in this folder.
