Genealogy

My family genealogy has been researched over time by three different family members from three different branches of the family, and each branch is now saved in one of three different systems, i.e. PAF (LDS), FTM (Family Tree Maker) and Geni (.com).

Each of these system files have place names and the individual or individuals associated with each of the place names.

I travel frequently, and I would like to find a way to add the place names and the individual associated with each of the place names as POIs and then copy these POIs to my Garmin Nuvi.

This way, when I'm on the road I could stop and visit the places where my ancestors were born, married, lived, died or are buried.

In addition, when I'm in a location where they died and are buried, then I could locate and record the location of the cemetery and their gravestone in the cemetery, and then add it to the PAF, FTM and Geni system files so that other family members have this information.

And, as other family members travel then they could also record the information in their GPS units and contribute back to the family system files.

While I know this is theoretically possible, I would appreciate thoughts, comments and guidance on how to generate POIs and include the association of the individual from PAF, FTM and Geni. And, I would also appreciate knowing how to add the locations that I've saved (associated with the individual or individuals) in my GPS back into PAF, FTM and Geni.

Hi, I'm not registered at any site of this type. I can see the usefulness of your venture but have no idea what info these sites permit posting. Building a csv file shouldn't be much problem, e.g. log, lat, family member name and detail, expanded details. The site may not allow posting files, you could always give a comment to email you for GPS file or post text for individuals provided it is privately controlled.

How about something like this:

It can translate GEDCOM to GPX. (For the benefit of other readers, virtually all genealogy software can export to Gedcom).

You could add a default TourGuide audio alert to each POI (with a circular radius of several miles?), to alert you when you are near one of them.

I've not tried that software, so can't vouch for its effectiveness, but it looks quite interesting. I might have a closer look myself, when I get a minute!

There are also quite a lot of GEDCOM to CSV converters to be found (via Google).
