Educator

I am a middle school educator - special education. Nothing special about the education, just the kids. They are all EBD. All with Emotional Behavior Disabilities. In other words, I am in a classroom with kids that have learning disabilities, behavior issues, don't understand respect, and don't know or want to take responsibility for anything.

Basically, education takes back burner to keeping the peace. wink

investment management

I'm a retired electrical engineer. Since my former employer was a modern company they had a "defined contribution" rather than a "defined benefit" retirement plan, so when I retired I became entirely responsible for managing investments to feed, clothe, and house myself and my family for the rest of my life. I'm happy with that, as I've been an active and generally successful investor since 1971--though I fear greatly for the majority of my fellow retirees who lack interest and skill in this area.

So while I do lots of other things, many of them in the form of making and consuming music, what I do for a living is indeed investment management. I just don't have any clients outside my family.

A juggler...

patent attorney with a background in physics and computer science

also doing engineering work for a startup, designing, building, testing, evolving interesting gadgets.

Recently I bumped into a guy I'd worked with at another company in a past decade. Asked him what he was doing. He replied that he was retired.

Gee, when did that happen, I asked.

He told me, about a year ago, but he'd just figured it out.

Oh, and I am a juggler -- balls, clubs, small animals... I've taught many people to juggle, including my son.

Not sure if I'm in the same boat or not -- maybe I'll know better next year?

Still having fun though!

Communication Tech. - retired

I've done almost everything connected to the communication industry. My last job lasted 25 yrs and I was a fiber optic tech for one of the larger telecommunications companies. But I've been retired for the last 10 yrs and it's the best job I've ever had!

Geek/Dad/Trainer

Mostly a Geek (a good thing) & a Dad, but for a living I train other geeks & engineers about the details of how computer storage systems work - or SHOULD work.

Also help with a website or two, mostly to help my friends & family, but it does bring a LITTLE bit of $$. Every bit helps.

Currently Retired

worked for 32 years as a civil servant for the Navy. I was classified as an electronic engineer. I supervised a group of other engineers that evaluated U.S. Naval weapons (mostly surface to air missile systems). Our job was to determine how well the systems worked and figure out why they didn't always work as designed.
It was a great job.

I have seen the future and it is now!

I worked

40 years for a floor tile manufacturer, as a supervisor. January 1 of this year I retired and I love it, never thought I would see the day when I didn't have to get up at 4:30am and go to work. January 1, 2014, best day of my life.

As I'm retired, now for 12 years, I don't do anything for a living. With that said, I stay so busy with projects around the house, I don't know how I ever found the time to work a full-time job.

My Uncle Sugar (US) deposits a monthly stipend in my checking account for the mandatory withdrawals they took from my paycheck for over 40 years.

Before I retired I worked in biotech sales of hi-tech laboratory capital equipment to life-science research labs in university, government, biotech and pharmaceutical accounts.

K12 education

I have been retired for 5 years and had a wonderful career in K12 education. I started out as a HS math teacher, then went into IT for 34 years before retiring. Served many roles in IT for education over the years ... from mainframes to smartphones ... what a ride!

Retired 9 years ago

Update to my previous post in 2009:

Retired at 55 after 37 years with a Federal agency.

For the past five years I have managed a website and databases for a local school district part-time. My contract ends on June 30th and I am considering non-renewal.

I have three Caribbean cruises planned for the Fall and my part-time position prohibits my frequenting more islands and beaches. I am considering a new line of work however, BEACH INSPECTOR.
