Garmin Ecoroute

Anyone else see the post on Garmins Blog? Sounds really cool!

http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2009/01/saving-gas-and.htm...

Only problem right now is that the link is dead and I can't see if my GPS is compatable.

I wonder whether the

I wonder whether the ECOROUTE will be updated through WEBUPDATER ... or some other "potentially GPS corrupting" way.

The link is still dead ... as is the link to the announcement (Jan 7) that Garmin Lifetime Maps starts Jan 21st.

Wonder if the "dead links" are a foreshadowing of how Garmin has its act together on these two major improvements.

Garmin 205, 260W, 1450LMT, 2460LMT, HEREwego for iPhone ... all still mapping strong.

link works now

the link to the press release works and the link to the ecoroute works. However, the ecoroute page is basic with no details of compatible units or any other links. I'm sure they're working on it though.

.

Great, one more useless feature to bog down the GPS processor!!

Why can't Garmin just concentrate on making the core functions work properly.

Now that the link is working

Now that the link is working ... to a page with no useful information ... here's what they claimed ECOROUTE will do:

"users will have a “less fuel” option as a routing preference."

This has to be smoke and mirrors, folks.

There is no way the GPS is going to know which vehicle I'm driving ... and there is a big difference in fuel-saving routes between my Silverado 2500HD ... and my Honda Accord.

Losing my momentum (ie at a stop sign) sucks a lot more fuel in my Silverado 2500HD to get it rolling than it does in my Honda.

How is ECOROUTE going to take that into account?

At best, this is an "advertising gimmick" that probably should have been rolled out when gas was more than $4.00 a gallon. Under $2 now, it's hammer down.

Supported nüvis can be customized by entering the vehicle type

It allows for input on the type of vehicle being driven. "Supported nüvis can be customized by entering the vehicle type and mileage. Entering the current price of gas also helps your nüvi calculate your savings."

Garmins EcoRoute link still

Garmins EcoRoute link still doesn't tell what units are compatible.

Very interesting if it works but I remain>>

skeptical. In a general sense I guess it routes you over interstates with no lights but for inner city applications I cannot see how it would be all that beneficial.

This is so cool, an absolute must in my opinion, i would never buy anything from garmin without this feature. i couldnt afford to go to work with gas prices the way they were, and sure to go up again, allready starting. I NEED this feature, if you dont like it burn gas. i dont care.

I would think that just finding stuff intercity wouldn't require finding an economical route. The EcoRouting would be of more benefit for longer trips requiring a tank of gas or more.

I jst tried this feature.

For local routes, it recomended i ride a bike.

For longer trips it kept me on smaller highways as gas is more efficient at 55 than 65

I just dont understand why it seems people get offended by other people having the option to use this feature.

If yo think its silly great don't use it.

Just because i joke around and ya serious, dont mean ya make any more sense.

nuvi Models

I heard it works with 2xx and 7xx series. Not sure about others yet.

WTF prompted that remark? >>

I've been on the Internet for many MANY years and that was hardly trollish unless someone has published a new definition of troll.

There are two tabs on the site, overview and compatability. Click on the compatability tab and select the 205 or 705 series and the next page has a check by which model groups are compatable and then lists all the individual models in that group.

whats old is new again

my GPS V used to have ecoroute nearly a decade ago..
they used to call it "gas mileage calculator"...
oh and it had configurable fields in the display while routing AND a full compass in the odo page.
maybe they can reinvent the wheel and bring back some of the "features" they lost after a decade of "progress".

what fields?

What fields were/are available for input? What if the vehicle is customized from factory specs?

It's In The Video

anent wrote:

Anent,

Just check out the video, that should answer your questions. Since the computations are based on data you provide (not by name/model of your car) any modifications wouldn't have a bearing on the output. Example, if you've done engine mods that cause the vehicle to get lower average mileage you'll be inputting that mileage. Someone with the same car but without mods would probably be inputting different mileage.

Cheers wink

ECOROUTE

Garmin Says : ecoRoute lets nüvi users choose “less fuel” as the best way to save gas and money. Through ecoRoute’s Fuel Report, Mileage Report and fuel-saving tips, you can focus on your fuel conservation even when you’re not behind the wheel. And you can customize your nüvi to fit your vehicle by accessing the “vehicle profile” under ecoRoute in the tools menu. There, you can enter your car’s fuel economy and the current price of gas to help nüvi better calculate your savings. Visit www.garmin.com/ecoroute for more information and watch the blog for ecoRoute updates.

That isnt going to work if you have a Lead Foot

I'd give it a go

If this feature was available for my Nuvi 760, I would use it, or at least give it a try. Not something I would consider upgrading my unit for though.

Is it the same?

Ford just announced Eco-Route as an option on select 2011 models. I wonder if it is the same as Garmin's?

sure seems like a useless feature to me - great if someone else likes it, but don't see any application with me. I'd much rather that Garmin spend their time on features that would more helpful.

How about better routing algorithms?

Garmin Ecoroute

My 265WT either came with this feature (bought in October '09) or it was added during an update. Anyway, when I go to the route preference setting less fuel is there. I haven't done any testing to see how it changes routing so if anyone has it would be interesting to hear.
