Is it common for a gps to recalculate after stopping for a short period? when I start to move it jumps all over recalculating and has at times caused me to turn at the wrong road. any explanations?

When sitting still, the unit is constantly recalculating its position. Due to the inaccuracy of these units, that can cause the calculated location to move by 50 ft or so and the unit could conclude you've left the route and try to recalculate. There have been plenty of questions about why the vehicle icon can appear to change directions on the map, and I believe I had your experience at least once. The important thing would be to ignore any recalculation that resulted while sitting still -- it should then give you another recalculation back to the original route, once you resume your original route.

My explanation would be poor signals

Check the strength and quality of your satellite signals, but if does it consistently in different places, and different times, then I would suspect some issue with the receiver.

To check for satellites signals strength, press and hold for about 7 seconds the little bars that indicate signal quality, that will take you to a screen indicating the satellites that are being used, the strength of the signal, and the accuracy.
