Text Editor
If you want to open the files to view or edit the contents on your computer, you can use a text editor like Notepad.
To upload the files to your Nuvi, you use POI Loader.

don't use "open with"

Micsosoft has some annoying habits. You should have some sort of option like "save as" or "open with" and apparently "open with" is the default being chosen. What you want to do is select the "save as" option and just save the file. You are likely usinf MS Internet Explorer and I can't be more specific since I never use it.
Once you have the file saved on the disk, you can open it with any editor you desire. Apparently your system will default to Word, which will work as long as you take care to save it back without any extra formatting added (save as raw text) and don't change the extension.
Which brings up the whole question of "can you even see the extension". I think you will avoid a lot of problems in the future if you disable the annoying "feature" of XP to hide files extensions "for known file types".

I am reading your question a little different. When you download the gpx file from POIFactory it is not being saved as a gpx file right?Using internet explorer.Click save and you should see file name listed and save as type it should show gpx document. If not click on the down arrow and see if you can select gpx.If that does not work what file is it?

I use XMLMarker
I downloaded the free XMLMarker program from:
http://XMLMarker.com
And have associated gpx files with it, so I only double-click on them and have an excellent XML editing program.
