Who is maintaining the Starbucks POIs?

I sent the following message to the werskine contact awhile back but never got a response.

There is a Starbucks in Basha's grocery store at
1631 McCulloch Blvd N,
Lake Havasu City, AZ 86403

Starbucks closed a lot of locations this year. Has the file been updated for the newly-closed stores?

Is anyone maintaining it now?

Ken,
This is a pretty huge project and I am overseeing it.

I am still trying to determine how to manage a project of this size.

Miss POI

trying to get info from Starbucks

I have exchanged a couple e-mails with Starbucks trying to get a current listing of their store and franchises but they are acting like they don't have anything printed/PDF available.

I sure would like the POI file to include addresses and it would be really nice if they indicated whether they were standalone stores or stores inside other businesses and, if so, which business.
Makes it a lot easier to find them.

It just seems to me like a huge missed marketing opportunity for Starbucks to not make such resources available.

.

You might have better luck going to the T-Mobile web site and checking the wifi locations. Nearly all Starbucks have T-Mobile wifi setups.

Miss POI

Hey if enough members are willing to take on 25 to 50 locations and gather the needed information, you can be the central point to combine all the data to a single POI file. We would all need to conform to a standard format or template file. You can assign as you see fit by coordinates, states, cities, etc. to make the research more manageable for those that are helping.

25 to 50 locations each is not a whole lot to do and would be manageable for most who wish to contribute.

Changes to Starbucks

There used to be text editing programs that could be programmed to edit automatically edit text files like Starbucks.csv, but I haven't used any in 15 years. You can feed the editing program Starbucks.csv, then a .csv file with listings to be deleted from Starbucks.csv, and then another .csv file with listings to be added to the Starbucks.csv, the updating is very quick even on an 8000 entry .csv file. The problem is editorial filtering of the suggestions for deletion & addition.
This is what I have found in my area that varies from the Garmin Starbucks.csv that I downloaded from this site:

BAD LOCATIONS that need to be deleted & reason
-81.68475,41.29295," ""Starbucks""" shows a single mailing address of 2 different Starbucks which are actually located at 2 different Ohio Turnpike service plazas. The location shown is NOT accessible from the Ohio Turnpike. The two actual locations are not accessible to each other. Actual new locations & names follow
-81.675236,41.291149," ""Starbucks Towpath SP"""
-81.671363,41.292369," ""Starbucks Great Lakes SP"""
ADD NEW LOCATION & NAME
-81.476988,41.163390," ""Starbucks CuyFalls OH"""

management of the project

My two cents worth.

Maybe the list can be broken down via time zone. That way the massiveness of the list will be in smaller bite sizes. If not by time zones, then by a regional list including certain states in a certain list. NE, SE, Central, etc.

The benefit could be more manageable list and as a person like me would not be as interested in the west coast list unless I am headed that way. For those states that have to time zones, use the predominate time zone for all their SBX.

Oh and I volunteer to help with my State/Region. At least confirming as needed. SBX gets quite a bit of money from my bank account and it might be fun to go to a few locations I have not been to recently.

Miss POI, regarding POI's

Starbucks' website has a store locator which will give the store pictured on a google map, or was it a yahoo map. Anyway, they must have a database for all this data, including street address, phone number, mainly the GPS coordinates, and it's up to date, at least for my area. What better place to get an up to date database?
It would be in their better interests to give out this info, wouldn't it? Bringing in more customers, if you can have an alarm sound anytime you get within x proximity of a starbucks...
I see no harm in NOT giving this database out...
If enough people were to email them and explain/ask for this info to be publically available, then it'd be easy to always have an up to date poi file for starbucks.
I've written them inquiring about it.

.

People have requested it and for their own business reasons, they have chosen not to provide this information.

If you get on the starbucks

If you get on the starbucks website and use their store locator you can see nearby starbucks' and if they are in a grocery store or book store. Don't know if that is what you were looking for, but its somethin.

I Live in Fort Worth, Tx I would easily be able to manage getting required info for the Starbucks locations around DFW area.

Latest POI Database Goes Backward

I had downloaded a Starbucks database on 3/1/2009. It had a lot of locations but no names and phones numbers. I just downloaded the new one dated 3/2/2009 and it has names and phone numbers but is missing many of the locations in the previous version. I would rather have the previous version with more locations (I can look them up on the map) than a new one with fewer locations even if it has names and phone numbers. How can I get the previous verion back? I overwrote what I had assuming the new one would simply add names and numbers to the old one. Thanks. I e-mailed werskine.

It's possible that the loss

It's possible that the loss of locations is due to Starbuck's closing a lot of stores in response to decreased revenues and the economy in general. They had announced starting closings some 6 months ago.

Starbucks POIs

No I am talking about locations in my area I visit. The new file is a smaller version of the previous one but with locations. It suggests it is probably missing many others in other locations. I just downloaded the previous file on 3/1/09. I saw the 3/2/09 file and thought it was the previous one with the locations listed but it is not. The previous file was more accurate. I am hoping Miss POI can help restore the previous version or that someone downloaded it late Feb 09 and can share it again.

Starbucks POIs

Werskine sent be a version that is not the previous version. It is just the current one without the locations and numbers. Can anyone else help? The currently file is missing open Starbucks in my location.

Starbucks/Mimi's Cafe - Quality of Garmin Data

We just took one of those "Grand Tours" visiting our daughters in college, covering 700+ miles in one day. Of course it was also raining, cold, foggy, etc.

Anyway, my wife decides on stopping at Starbucks and Mimi's in BOTH cases the Garmin GPS data was wrong/old. Considering the weather, we didn't need to have "issues" with the Garmin.

This experience raises a couple of issues.
1. Every chain on their webistes should have a dowloadable CSV file (or other GPS Compatible file). I would think that Starbucks would have such a downloadable file. I guess their marketing people are computer challenged.

2. Garmin, should be taking the initiative, if they haven't done so, to request that these companies provide updates on a quarterly basis. This is critical with Starbucks as they are CLOSING stores. We recently updated our Garmin. The update should have included "new" Mimi's Cafe. Undortunately Garmin didn't. By the way the POI factory has a POI file that lists Mimi's Cafe. Too bad, we didn't load that one before we left.

I agree, but the reality is that so far, it hasn't worked that way.

1. It is amazing to me, and other members here, that so many companies (not all) seem totally dis-interested in having their locations in a POI file. There have been numerous posts here that members have contacted companies and either received no response or a response that basically said they weren't interested. They are satisfied with their website "locator" function. They don't seem to get it that when driving in a car, most drivers don't have their laptop in front of them to find the nearest location using their web site, but, we do have our GPS units.

2. Garmin buys their map data from Navteq, which is where the problem lies. Navteq just doesn't keep current with POIs, and in some cases, roads. That's one of the reasons POI Factory has been so successful - more current and accurate POI data since we can't rely on it from the manufacturers.

So Unfortunately True

The issue with NAVTEQ is one of the emerging irritants that this trip exposed. It amazed me that we were "off the the map" while on Interstate 40!!!! I realize that this is a big country and it can take a while to update the maps, but the lack of an update on a segment of Interstate 40 that is at least a couple of years old is absurd.

After investing $$$$ buying the Garmin Nuvi650 and the subscription for updates, this was quite disappointing. I haven't yet sent in my "complaint" to Garmin. I hope that Garmin isn't one of those companies that views their customers as "revenue units". Fortunately this website exists and I was able to "fix" my Mimi's Cafe problem.

Error Forms

Do you have the Garmin & Navteq error reporting links? Two years behind is nothing compared to some of the reports I've read about here at the Factory. Four years or more is not uncommon.

Pretty pathetic isn't. I don't buy GPS's for the POI's, but for navigation purposes. When major Interstates can't be up-to-date is beyond me. The plans for Interstate changes are planned way in advance and are pretty much completed on time. There is no excuse for these types of errors. Not to mention addresses on the wrong side of the street and way off the mark by as much as a 1/4 mile or more. Please don't respond to this with excuses for Navteq. I've owned Garmins for almost 10 years and it has actually gotten worse.
I apologize for going off topic.

Starbuck's Update

Over the past week I have exchanged emails with NAVTEQ and Garmin. To make a long story short, it turned out that I did NOT have the current map version on my Nuvi650. Garmin acknowledged that the Starbucks was in the wrong location and that not all the Mimi's cafes in the area were listed.

Concerning the current map version, it is now 2009.11. The important lesson from this experience is that you need to undertake three checks to verify that you have the current data for your GPS. I just checked one webpage, and assumed that I was up-to-date since it said my maps were up-to-date. That turned out to be a faulty assumption on my part.

I also suggested to Garmin that they attempt, for major retailers, to get store locations directly from the companies. These companies already have the GPS data available for their "store locater" webpages. In the case of Starbucks, this is important as they are closing stores.

Also it turned out that my software firewall blocked the download of the map update. So you may want to be aware that this can be a "silent" problem.

Even if some members did their state, county or a 50 mile radius of their home I think it would help.

Well, I've done Orange County california,
and verified some of them. I've got the ones i've personally verified marked in the description. The rest are geocoded. So you're welcome to use mine.

Verdi, CA

The location in Verdi, CA does not exist the POI takes you to a dirt side street. We did not see any sign of a Starbucks anywhere in the town

Starbucks Missing from POI Spread Sheet

Safeway Store -
5727 Burke Center Pkwy
Burke, VA 22015
Latitude: 38.798874 / Longitude: -77.321617
If it appears that there is one right next door. That is not a mistake, but it is about 5 doors down, and in a stand alone bldg.

Correction to HHI stores never made it into POI

This is a question for the ages. I sent the corrections back in July for the actual coordinates of the Hilton Head Island stores when I was there on vacation and they still have not made it into the POI.

Miss POI, If you like I can send them to you and perhaps you can get them added.

Please let me know.
