Garmin 265WT new user post

I just joined the Garmin family yesterday with the arrival of a new 265WT. I went over it's features with a friend who has a 260 and he told me about this site.

I'm not completely new to GPS though, I've had a Garmin Edge 205 for my bicycle for two years now, and a 2006 Lexus with nav. I've also used my Dad's hand held Magellan for years to mark hunting way points.

I ordered the Garmin for my truck mostly because I have come to appreciate the nav unit in the Lexus.

Not sure what I'm looking for in a POI file, but my wife and I enjoy loading our bicycles up on the Lexus and driving to new bike trails. In 2006 we toured Wisconsin, in 2007 Minnesota, and this past year we rode just over 200 miles Iowa's trails.

Thanks to you all for the warm welcome. Glad to hear bike trails is an ongoing POI project.

We have a lot of fun, and meet a lot of people on the trails. I have downloaded some POIs, now I need to figure out how to use them. Who know, maybe some day I'll learn how to make them.

Nuvi 265WT

So, how do you like the 265WT, I have the 205w and am considering getting my wife the 265wt. She wants the street names announced and the traffic service. I bought the traffice service extra for the 205w, but the 265WT comes with it included as I understand.

I'm still learning to use and appreciate traffic. My wife says she has seen it on the unit, but I was busy driving in it at the time.

I was thinking about getting the 255W, but wanted to try the blue tooth. I already have a bluetooth unit called Motormouth which is very clear, but it takes away my radio. Using bluetooth on the 265WT allows me to keep the radio, but the speaker is not clear.

Bluetooth not the best, Traffic Great!

The 265t is my first garmin, and so far it is Wonderful. I'd like the screen to be bigger, but I saved about 30 bucks for the 3.5"

The bluetooth clarity is not that great when driving, unless your cabin is super quiet when on the road. I know they have a 255t which is the same as the 265t minus the bluetooth capability. I would've gotten that, but I couldn't find one in the U.S. market. If you foresee yourself hitting a lot of traffic, it is definitely worth getting the 265t or 255t. If only on occasion, I would say it is not worth the money.

trip detail

When you touch the speed it brings up a trip detail screen. I like to have that one up. The only thing is miss from the map screen is the distance to next turn.

The speed on the Garmin is exact to my truck, but I expect that to change as the tires wear.

Where is the elevation? Can this thing give me elevation? Am I the only one who monitors elevation?

Elevation

My wife and I like to check elevation too, especially when we travel in the mountains.

Two ways to do it. Touch your vehicle icon, (on the map screen) the elevation will appear under the My Location: in the third line. (upper left corner)
Or go to the menu screen, hold on the signal bar (upper left corner) for a few seconds and it appears along with the satellite info.

Wow this site is great

Thanks, I didn't know I could touch the car and get another screen.

I loaded up 300,000 POIs and I ready to travel. Now this is getting exciting.

I even found e85 stations.

Traffic and speed

The free traffic on the 265WT isn't very helpful. It seems to tell you where traffic is typically busy for the hour an day of the week, but doesn't tell you actual traffic.

The speed is measured by satellite, not tire rpm, so isn't related to tire diameter.
