All POI

Is there a way to get all the latest USA poi in one big Download in stead of downloading bits here and there. I just got a Magellan Maestro 3250 and I want it to be fully updated. I bought a update maps 2008/2009 thinking there's poi updates but when I hit the poi button it ask me to insert in my SD Card which I have BUT no poi.

no one file

There is no all-in-one file here. Of course, there are very likely other sites on the web that have some good and different POI files. But would you even really want such an all-in-one file of all the POIs here? For example, you might not want all of the strip clubs in the country included in your POI list. Or you might not care about someone's list of their favorite night spots in Boise. If you are not a ham radio operator then the repeater lists would be useless for you. Personally I swore off McDonalds 35 years ago after puking up my last Big Mac, and I sure don't need to take up memory space or having their joints clutter my screen.

Having one big file also makes the points much harder to manage, organize, and update. And although POIs are relatively small, GPS memory is finite (and more finite on some units than others), and the potential list of POIs that could be created could well overwhelm any GPS. So overall it doesn't serve people to have one large cumbersome file.

You got a point Thank You I

You got a point Thank You I will just pick and choose what I want.

Which kind of POIs

IMPORTANT question: Does it do this for ALL types of POIs or just for "custom" or "user" POIs ??

It should never ask you for an SD card for the built-in POI's. If it is doing that, you need to call Magellan because something went wrong with your update.

What would it do to performance?

I would think a huge POI would really slow performance of the GPSr. Particularly when trying to search for a POI. Besides, do you really need EVERY one? I find that it is better to choose the files for things you believe you would need to search for. My nüvi seems to really slow down in searching if I keep too many files on the device. I keep a folder on my desktop with POIs I like to use from time to time and just or unload them as needed.

but wait, there's still more ...

Yes, it also would slow performance, another problem that I only thought of after I made my original post. Also, another reason to avoid doing this is that when manually setting the proximity alert for a file, you would only be able to enter one distance for all POIs, and it would be an all or nothing thing. As it is now I have no proximity alerts for most of my POI filles, but have alerts on other files, and they vary on distance depending on the type of POI.

Another thought

And still another thought is that with all that clutter it will be harder to filter out what really is at that intersection as you are driving.

I don't relish their food either, but their new coffee blend is great, and their rest rooms are usually the cleanest ones to be found.

It's a good place to stop for a shot of caffeine and to wash up.

My wife and I now refer to McDonald's as McWee-Wees for just the reasons cited - good coffee and clean bathrooms.

off-topic, recalculating ....

We're getting a bit off-topic but ...

When I say I swore off them, I meant it and am quite determined about it. I can be a stubborn cuss. I did like their french fries and do miss them, but not enough to ever eat or drink there again. I have been inside one a few times when with a group who insisted on stopping there, but I skipped getting anything, even a drink, and survived. I guess I would be willing to make a contribution at their rest room, but that's about all that company is ever going to get from me again.
