Garmin 205W - Questions

first I love the 205W with the new software that shows speedlimits, etc it rocks!

the 205W says "Turn Left" but not "Turn Left on First street" is there a way to add that without upgrading to a new more expensive Garmin?

also I have lots of POI data loaded for Starbucks, Red Light, etc. can I add sounds like .MP3 or .WAV so it can say "StarBucks" instead of just the boring tone?

thanks!

No Street Names

By design, the 205W does not speak street names and can't be modified to do so.

It also doesn't have an MP3 player, but you should be able to install wav audio alert files with the custom POI files you can download from the POI Factory. You can't however, change the default "ding" for the built-in POIs.

Garmin 205

You would have to upgrade to the 255W to get a nuvi that speaks street names in a comparable unit.

That was the exact reason I

That was the exact reason I went with the 255W.

I have the 205 and I tried

I have the 205 and I tried to use a .wav file for rest areas and when I loaded POILoader it gave me an error, could load or convert audio, so I converted to MP3 and it loaded everything fine. I still have not tested it, so I can't say it's working but POILoader seems to only want to use mp3.

POI Loader

Yes, you have to use the POI Loader program to load POI files, custom bitmaps and custom audio alerts.

Does the 205 have an mp3 player? I'm not familiar with that model so I'm not sure if it will play mp3 format audio alert files or if you will have to convert them to wav format.

EDIT: I posted earlier in this topic that it doesn't have an mp3 player - DUH! redface

Nuvi 205 doesn't have mp3 capability. It will load the file but will not work. You have to use wave file.See this node for more info http://www.poi-factory.com/node/18752

Thanks charlesd45, I wasn't sure about the 205 playing mp3s. Scarr105 will have to go the SOX.EXE route, as you indicated.

I have read so many owner

I have read so many owner manuals on the 200 series almost know them by heart.I was thinking about that sox file that you put up for download. It sure would be nice if that file showed as attachment on POI Factory as a download.Plus the instructions for installation. With all the sales I have seen on the 200 models a lot of people are going to want the wave files.Maybe even posting wave sounds like the mp3.

What error did it give you? Most often this is the result of using no Sox.exe file, the WRONG Sox file, or an improper wav file. The wav must be PCM 44.100kHz 16 Bit, Mono. Gary_A has provided the proper Sox file at http://rs56.rapidshare.com/files/139638423/sox.zip .

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Actually hosting the file on the POI Factory would be a decision for Miss POI, but on this page

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16728

she gave me editing privledges so I can add or change what is written there if you don't think the instructions are clear enough. I'll entertain any suggestions.

If we came up with a better set of instructions, I could even put them in a readme.txt file and include it in the zip archive file that gets downloaded.

No they are pretty clear

No they are pretty clear there.I was thinking along the lines of the info being on FAQ with other items listed with Garmin.

I'm not sure if that node is accessible from the FAQ or not. Maybe Miss POI can shed some light mrgreen

I got my Garmin Nuvi 200w to

I got my Garmin Nuvi 200w to work with the wav file.

The most helpful one is found at this link:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/18560

I use POI Loader version 2.5.3

***important *** SOX - only version 14.0.1 works the newer version does not work besure to get version 14.0.1

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=10706&...

also copy the sox.exe and cygwin1.dll file you downloaded into your c:\garmin folder.

Thanks
