Loss of Signal in Downtown

I lose the signal with my Nuvi 350 and Nuvi 750 when I get into downtown Pittsburgh and downtown Atlanta on business. Too many highrise buildings make it like a canyon.

Your GPSr obtains the satellite signal by 'line of sight' which means it has to see the satetellites to get a signal. The signal can actually bounce off buildings effecting the accuracy of the location. So, in a nutshell, all GPSs can lose signals in a downtown high rise area. It takes a minimum of 3 satellites (4 for altitude) to get a position solution so you can see how the buildings effect the results.

Hide out under a leafy tree and you can see the same result.

Thanks all for your

Thanks all for your feedback.

No loss in downtown

I have a 770 and haven't lost a signal yet. I drive in the DC and Northern VA area, so quite a few high rise buildings.

rarely lose signal

I have not lost signal in DC either. (nor Philadelphia, Providence, Hartford etc.)

But I have experienced signal loss in downtown NYC (only downtown - has been fine in midtown), and once in Boston (but only for a couple of very brief moments).

me too

Same for me in:

LA, cali
Amsterdam
Geneva, Switzerland
Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

Anywhere with tall buildings or metal infrastructure may cause signal loss.

Loss of Signal/Long Time Acquiring One

My nuvi 760 has a hard time in cities with tall buildings (Boston, NY) but recently I am having a hard time with the looong time it is taking it to locate the satellites (from everywhere).

Is that normal?

760 fairly useless in downtown Chicago

My 760 is fairly useless in downtown Chicago. What's even worse than "no signal" is a really weak signal. It jumps it's position all over the place and goes nuts with constant recalculating. My 350 is pretty much the same, too.

signal loss

my 250w drops its signal in tunnels but resumes in about 5secs. after coming out of the tunnel ,pretty good i think.

See this link, this was discussed not long ago.

Deep canyons - urban or not

This is quite common. I lost reception in a deep canyon on Apache Trail. Your GPS needs to have at least three satellites in direct view to figure out where it is

How long should it take for a GPS to loci in a signal

Hi guys,

has anyone run into how long it should take for the GPS to lock in a signal when you first turn it on? Since I went to the 460 update with my nuvi 760 it seems like it is taking for ever.

Thanks

Try regularly deleting the track log

Thanks

I noticed the same thing with my 760 after upgrading to 4.6. I have found that clearing the track log every couple of days makes a huge difference in start up time.

Frequent Use Helps, but nothing helps under the elevated train

Hi guys,

I noticed that if I use my Garmin 760 frequently it kind of locks onto a satellite faster, but my recent NY experience has left me wanting for something else. I turned off the GPS to go to a store in Astoria (Ditmars Boulevard where the elevated train tracks are) and even turning the GPS off for half an hour and then coming out did not help. I could not get a signal under the tracks which made for a hairy experience when you are not quite sure where you are going.

Any similar experiences and solutions?

Thanks

i think that goes with any device or most. it only make sense. it may have to depend on how strong your signal is or how thick the clouds go(?) but i know from experience if you got a thick roof on top of you (ie a tunnel, parking garage) the gps 'loses satellite connection'.
