Anyone tried sending a MapQuest route to their nuvi yet?

In general, it seems to work real well.

However, I created a route, and made use of the avoid button, to make MapQuest alter the route shown on the map, to avoid turning at an intersection, in favor of one a little further down the road.

MapQuest made the adjustment just the way I wanted, so I saved it, and then used the Send button to send it to my 765T.

I then power up the nuvi, go to My Data, import the route, and the nuvi recalculates it, and says that it has been imported successfully.

Trouble is, when I go to Custom Routes, and take a look at the route on the map, it has chosen a slightly different route, no longer avoiding the turn at the intersection I wanted to avoid.

My nuvi was set in Fastest Time mode.

Could this have happened due to a difference in the map data at MapQuest, and in the map data in the nuvi?

Has anyone else tried sending a route to their nuvi?

Jim

Mapquest Routes

Hey, Jim!

To actually have the route as entered go into your nuvi, you have to add waypoints, not just avoid streets in Mapquest. You need to actually drag and drop the road to the route you want, which sets a waypoint. Otherswise it just sets starting and ending points, which just has the nuvi calculate it the way it wants to.

Hope this helps!

This is MapQuest not Mapsource right?

just want to be sure, that the experience you are relating is from the MapQuest web site, and not the Mapsource app.

Yes, I'm talking about www.mapquest.com Try dragging a route to a different street and you'll see what I mean.

will do

and thanks for the feedback.

one thing though...will dragging the route to force it use a road you prefer, cause the waypoint to show up as a flag, and then be announced as an arrival, before proceeding to the next one or your final destination?

that has been reported by some as happening when you create a route in the Mapsource app.

no big deal if it does, as I could live with that...plus I saw a post for another forum where you could grab an app that will convert the waypoints, so that they don't show up as flags and announced arrivals.

Does it require any software to do so?

I believe it does set flags, but you can just pass them up.

Software

The only software I believe that's required is Garmin Communicator available on their website.

Just tried the drag the route tip you provided

pretty sweet...haven't had a chance to test drive the route yet, and it will probably create the flags and announce the arrival, but as you say, you can just ignore that...I was getting a little too picky in what I was trying to accomplish, because I was having a blast with all that I have picked up here.

but this will suit my needs just fine...I can create a route, save it to MyMaps, send it to my nuvi, test drive it, and if I am satisfied, then go back to MyMaps, and email it to my nuvi owning coworkers, to open and send to their units....this will come in real handy for some bike riding get toethers we have planned for next summer.

thanks for setting me straight.

re: Just Tried....

Great, Jim!

Let me know how it works for you.

There's one way I take to get to a place in town, that may be a little longer or less direct, but by gosh I like that way and don't want to change. I simply did a few drag and drops and there's my route. This is a great convenience.

I wish that Google Maps would implement this. All you can do right now is transfer POI's to your favorites.

still having some trouble grush...

here is what I did...I entered a starting address and end address, and let Mapquest calculate the route.

then I did what you said, and dragged the line to another nearby street, and in a second or two, the route snapped to that street.

did that a few more times, and each time it looked like it was creating a waypoint.

I then saved the route to MyMaps, and sent the route to my nuvi, but once again, you need to import it by touching MyData, and when it imports the route, it recalculates it, and uses the original streets. evil

did I need to save the waypoints and send them to my nuvi separately, and before sending the route to my nuvi?

is it possible that it is just something about the streets I am attempting to divert it to?

any feedback would be great.

re: Still Having Some Trouble

Yesterday, I tried a route I saved from Mapquest and it routed me via the waypoints it saved and did fine. The route was much different than the nuvi would have calculated. You shouldn't have to save the waypoints seperately.

I'm not sure why the waypoints are not going into your nuvi. It sounds like it's just saving the starting and ending points.

When you dragged and dropped the streets, did the waypoints show up on the map? Also, I don't think I saved the route to Mymaps before tranferring to the 765.

I'll play around some more with Mapquest and try saving some routes, and try them out when I can and try to figure this out and get this resolved for you.

thanks buddy

I will do the same, but I won't have any time until the weekend.

No problem, Jim!

I haven't been getting out much either, as we've had a lot of snow and bad roads lately.

I have to go into town on Friday, and to the airport on Saturday. Will check it out then and let you know the results.

Finally figured this out

not quite as nice as I had hoped, but I can make it work.

I was following the tip from grush about dragging the Mapquest route where I wanted it, and letting it create viapoints with red circles along the route where you are forcing the new street to be taken. But after importing into my 765T, the nuvi would recalculate and ignore those viapoints.

You have to right click each red circle, choose options, and then make it a routepoint instead.

Routepoints

Hey Jim!

Calculated a route on Mapquest today when I went into town and the Garmin didn't follow the route.

You probably got it right with clicking the circles and making it a routepoint.

Funny thing is, I don't remember doing that before.

I'm going to play around with it some more this weekend and let you know what I find out.

Maquest routepoints

When the location is made into a route point the red button becomes a five pointed star and is assigned an intermediary letter designation. Mapquest then creates a sub-direction list between each route point. The only way I saw to delete the route point other than dragging it to another location was to delete it in the Directions list above. Overall pretty nice and perhaps easier to use than Mapsource for some.

still not clear

I'm still not clear how to select this route once I've saved the waypoints to my nuvi 360.

.

You can't select a saved route on the nuvi 360. It doesn't support that function.

You would need to manually select each waypoint/favorite to which you wish to navigate in the sequence in which you wish to navigate to them.

Thanks, I did not realize it had that limitation. I guess I should have put another model on my Christmas wish list!
