Speed & redlight cameras

Is a speed camera always on and only snaps a photo of the approaching car's front or back license plate when the driver exceeds 5% of the speed limit? How are away does the camera take a photo?

The same with the redlight camera (always on)?

I Know for sure that red light camera flash only when you run a red light. Not so sure about speed cameras

just use the poi files and

just use the poi files and u're set.

what are you planning?

Are you planning some sort of illegal activity in the vicinity of speed cameras and don't want to get filmed?

In AZ, I believe the redlight and speed cameras are always on. I have two co-workers confirm this, unfortunately. One ran a newly installed redlight camera, the other sped through a speed camera. Both received a ticket in the mail, with a link to a MP3 file, showing their moving car, their face, and license plate. In addition, AZ does not issue front license plates, only rear. Also in AZ, the speed cameras allow from 5-10 mph above speed limit.

I would assume each state will operate under their own specific guidelines.

Hope this helps

Unless you see a local news report indicating the cameras have been turned off for some reason (lawsuit) consider them on 24/7/365. The cameras are usually set to take a series of front and rear photos so your face and license plates show.

For speed cameras the 'fudge factor' depends on your local jurisdiction. Some places use a percentage, others allow a flat five or ten mph over the limit before a speed photo is snapped. My local highway speed cams for example allow 10 mph over the limit when the limit is 65 but 11 mph over the limit when it's 55. Go figure. For the red light cameras just assume there's no fudging at all. If your front tire moves past the limit (white) line when the light is red you're going to get your picture taken.

Red light cameras (obviously) snap the pictures as you enter and pass through an intersection when the light is red. This can include failure to stop for a right turn on red (again, check your local situation). At one time or another your local newspaper has probably printed the information or you might find it on your city/county website. Here in the Phoenix area the data and general locations of all permanent cameras are posted online. We also have photo radar in white vans that park in random spots. A POI doesn't help with those but a radar detector (sometimes) does. hen your picture is taken you 'will' know it. The flash is fairly bright.

All jurisdictions claim a real cop reviews every single photo and the data recorded to be sure the face and license number are clear. If not then no citation is mailed. If violation is clear, you're pretty much toast. In some jurisdictions you can review the series of photos online. In others you may have to take a trip to the local courthouse or cop shop to view the additional evidence (beyond the single photo you're usually sent with the citation.

If you decide to challenge the citation it's your right. Be aware the judge will typically have all the photos and data available on a screen right in front of him/her.

Cheers wink

continuous recording

I believe he is asking if they are "filming" constantly and taking screenshots during portions that receive tickets, not if they are functioning or not. Like if someone were to get mugged on the street corner would it be on video from the speed camera. I do not know the answer.

Redlight Camera

This article from today's local paper, offers a little information on how they work for 2 cameras in Temple Terrace, FL, a few miles northeast of downtown Tampa.

For example: "The camera shutter only works when a car is rolling and the light is red." Different camera systems may operate differently, I don't know.

(Yes, I reported these to Miss POI several months ago, so they are already in the current redlight POI file).

Red light camera

the fine for red light camera ticket is different in every state?

Speed Camera Fines

In Alberta, speed and red light cameras can only be used in urban areas - because camera enforcement is not allowed on provincial highways or roads. A friend advised me that fines for speeding appear to be standard in Calgary and Edmonton - $89 for up to 20 kilometers per hour over the speed limit.

Up here you do not get points on your license for camera tickets. The cost for a speeding ticket would be the same if stopped by a "real" police officer. But because the person driving the car can be identified, the driver would also get demerits on their license (two demerits for up to 20 km over, four for 30 km, etc.). Five or more demierits and the annual cost of a driver's license goes up dramatically. My friend (who has also received tickets in person) pays around $500 per year, and I pay $60.

I guess the idea is DON'T SPEED.
