Arizona License Plate Holder Law

Kind of in line with all of the other AZ speed, license plate, etc discussions going on. I received this email:

From: *@azdps.gov
Sent: Tuesday, November 25, 2008 2:51 PM
Subject: new law

This new law takes effect Jan 1, 2009. Please understand you can have a license plate frame holder as long as it doesn't cover the name Arizona on the top your license plate. If the license plate frame holder covers the name Arizona you'll receive a $130.00 ticket! This is your responsibility as privileged Arizona drivers to know new motor vehicle laws, the state doesn't send out mailings. So if you have a frame holder that covers the name Arizona on your license plate, remove it before Jan 1, 2009, and replace it with one that doesn't cover the name Arizona.
License Plate Holder Law - State law* requires that the state name at the top of Arizona license plates must be visible. Any license plate holder or cover that prevents the license plate from being clearly legible is in violation of this new law. * A.R.S. 28-2354(B.)

not even worth it

Not even worth it to have a cover/holder on your plate these days. I think they look nicer with one on, but with this new law, its pointless. Gives the cops one more reason to pull you over for nothing...and usually that nothing leads to something else.

Plate Covers are cool as long as they don't cover up!

Covering the State name, expiration date or any other print on your plates so it can't be read is pretty pompous on someones part, you have to imagine States and counties put it there for a reason.
You would deserve a ticket for being stupid, if you cover any of the nomenclature in anyway.

.

Why does the state put the name in place that interferes with license plate frames... wink

I think the next step is a place for bar codes on plates so they can process tickets even faster, especially parking tickets.

Plate holder or advertising...

Most of the plate holders I've seen are nothing more than ads for the dealership the car was bought from. Seems a bit silly to pay thousands on thousands of dollars and then put tacky advertising onto the car. Then of course there's the 'I'd rather be shopping at Nordstroms'...

Even Stupider Is....

the person who pays to have personalized plates that say what kind of car that they are driving, as if you couldn't tell just by looking. Some examples would be...

PONY
STANG
VETTE
CHEVY
BENZ
RAV4
FORD
etc.,

all of which are actual plates that are taken by Arizona drivers. What a waste of money!

I always walk in with a contract for $3,000 for them to sign for displaying their advertising. Haven't had a dealer accept the contract, and my cars don't have their advertising.

Here in Delaware you can not

Here in Delaware you can not have any plate frame at all.

I've tried to pass the license frame info around. Even sent a note to our local NBC affiliate suggesting a public service announcement. I've only heard of the law thru the grapevine however it may have been on the news and I missed it.

In TN, the barcode is on the expiration sticker. And yes the local police have a barcode reader to scan the LP and DL.
