c5xx and nRoute

In previous discussions, I mentioned that the c530 was only seen by the PC as a set of drives (for use with POI Loader, for example, and could not be used with nRoute on a PC as a GPS. Garmin techs had confirmed this.

Today, in one of the discussions, I found the workaround. (Sorry, I couldn't remember who posted the solution). To get the Garmin c5xx to be recognized by the PC and software as a GPS, you need to get to the diagnostic screen (finger in upper right hand corner of screen when starting). Then, when you connect the unit to the PC, it sees it as a Garmin GPS and downloads a different driver. Within nRoute, you tell it that the GPS is connected up via USB.

When you disconnect the GPS, it reverts back to it's normal setup and is recognized again as a drive.

Pretty neat hack. Don't know why Garmin didn't provide access to both functions as the unit is certainly capable.

Works on a MAC with C550

HI,
I tried the hack on a Mac with a C550 and it worked with a Demo of Route Buddy for the Mac. Thanks for the hint.

Also, it will work with Franson's GPSGate software, which can convert the Garmin proprietery protocol to NMEA, so that you can then use it with any software that can talk to a standard GPS (For example, Microsoft Autoroute).

See: http://www.franson.com/gpsgate/ - there's a 14 day trial available.

I believe you are the one who suggested the original hack, and I wanted to give you credit.
I don't think I will have enough use for the GPS on my PC to purchase the software at this time, however it is nice to know it is available.

CXXX and nRoute

I have the C330, but I was unable to get it to work. I will try it from diagnostic mode if I am unable to get to work on my next attempt. My C330 would flash a data transfer message and my nRoute say searching for satellite, but it would not connect. Thanks for the info.

I recall a long time ago being able to connect my eMap to track via Mapsource, but could no longer find it in the software. Today, I was told by software support that it was a part of Mapsource, but was removed because of the size of the file got to be too big. They decided to release it as a separate software (nRoute).
