one of the saddest days in recent times (a random rant)

Sunday, November 23... the last day I saw my NUVI 660. I lent it to a friend and she called me later that evening to tell me that it had been stolen from her vehicle in a parking lot at a swim center in North Bethesda/Rockville Maryland.

She said she is willing to help me get a new one. And for that I am glad. I felt bad and I'm sure she felt bad too... I didn't want to make anything worst as it already is. I thought a positive approach is of the strong and something I had to do. It is easier to go apesh*t mad but that is not necessary. In the end, it's still just "a thing". It has some sort of sentimental value because it was with me with some people I love when I went traveling with it- saw places, etc... but it's still "just. a. thing.". BUT... it bothers me to this time that there's a thief out there who is having fun with something I worked my butt for. I bought it at $700+ when it was new. You can buy a 660 now for far less.

Included on it is an SD drive with all my favorite music and audible audiobooks. The addresses saved on there of the places I went to. Pictures of friends and family members, and ofcourse those awesome speed trap/traffic light info, my lists of best crabcakes in the state of Maryland, the different cool vehicles, and more from my time spent here in good ol' awesome poi-factory.

I am looking forward to getting a new gps. I have set my sight on a GARMIN. My experience with it has been great and I plan to stick with it. Not sure yet of what NUVI model to get. I usually check with Amazon.com member ratings and reviews as well as that of other "experts" on the web.

As corny as it sounds, I found myself reminiscing. I remember being in bed and going through and learning the buttons on what I'd consider one of my life's best investments. Last night, I saw myself sigh after sigh after sigh. and the occasional spontaneous four-letter bad word. And curses of, "i wish this person gets lost and gets directed to the police station", "I wish I had a self-destruct button on there." "I wish this person drives himself to a cliff". My misery deprived of company. I wanted a hug. I was at Chipotle earlier today and I was wondering if I could study at a nearby Borders book store.. but I wasn't sure how nearby it was... I didn't have my nuvi. oh dependency. =/

I wish I had Garmin Locked it =/. I wont say I wish I hadn't lent it... it happens.. but I think the worst thing I can do is become a protective, fearsome former GPS owner. I want to get a BETTER gps, I want to pack it with even better stuff,.. THE WORKS.. and for whomever stole my 660.. I hope that person is a robin hood type and is using that thing to help someone out. I hope. So my friends, what do you recommend for me?

I'm sorry to hear about what

I'm sorry to hear about what has happened to your Nuvi. If I were to look for a new Nuvi I would be looking at the Nuvi 7*5T series.

With it's Advanced navigation with lane assist
preloaded street maps for North America, Bluetooth® wireless, FM traffic, optional MSN®, Direct, lane assist, 3-D building view, photo navigation, speaks street names, widescreen, FM transmitter, MP3 player, route planning, Where am I?, Garmin Locate™

The thing I like most is the lane assist, it is the bomb!!

Stolen NUVI

While it may not help you recover the unit, you can contact Garmin about the fact it was stolen and they can lock the serial number so the unit cannot be updated or reregistered. I'm not certain what all the requirements are, but if you contact them, they should walk you through the needed information.

re: One Of The Saddest Days....

Sorry to hear your story korndogg27. It's nice that your friend will help you replace it (as she should). I know what it's like when you get used to a certain item and lose it, and reminisce about the original.

I have to agree with iceman2k4 about the 7x5 series. The 765T would be comparable with 660 that includes Bluetooth, etc.

Did you file a police report and let the police know it has your addresses, pictures, friends addresses, etc.? You may want to talk to them about upping the security on your house, etc.

Anyway, condolences on your loss, and I hope your new GPS becomes as much as a friend as the 660 was.

Empathy

I empathize with your loss. My old c340 was stolen from my car parked at my work place.

Police Report

I would also file a police report (or ask your friend to do so since it was taken from her car). I don't know about in your area, but in Colorado the pawn shops are required to turn copies of the pawn tickets over to police. They, in turn, check the serial numbers of all the computers and high dollar items to see if they can locate any stolen property. Some departments even keep lists of the pawned items, so if you go to them they can try to find your property on the list for you.

Could be worse

I just saw a story on the news today where a guy left his cell phone at a McDonalds. He called the store and they said they will keep it safe for him to pick up. Apparently an employee emailed himself the nude pictures of the guys wife that were on it and they are now on the internet. They are suing McDonalds for 3 million.

Dang, that sucks

I'm sorry for you loss. You can at least take heart in the fact that that $700 will buy you "more" GPS now.

sad day

Wow: I thought I was the only one who cared so much for my 660. Good luck in finding a suitable replacement. sad story!

Sams Club still sells the 650 for $199 if you don't need the bluetooth...same price as the 750.

Really feel for you

Really feel for you korndogg27, I bought my 660 two years ago for $900+ CAD and everytime I drop it I almost croak. Call me selfish but I don't ever lend it to anybody not even my wife. You've had a lot invested in the device so I can empathize with you in your loss. Hopefully you'll enjoy your new GPSr just as much, if not more, and rebuild your music and audio library etc.

Seems like this could be a

Seems like this could be a lesson for all of us gps owners.

uhhh

What all of us fear. I never leave it in my van overnight anymore. A suggestion that I have used is to have more than one unit. I have my c580, but loan the c330 and 200 out to friends for their trips and such.

That way when they take it for a week, I am not in "withdrawl":). Also, at the price they are many have bought their own after coming back, or they could afford to replace it if they broke it.

I'm a new user, and this is

I'm a new user, and this is probably no consolation, but consider this in the future. I do know that you can easily back an entire nuvi up to a folder on your hard drive. And you can upload your favorites into Mapsource for a back up there. You can probably get it from Garmin for free if you ask and don't already have it. That way, you can easily restore your favorites (doesn't have to be an identical unit) from Mapsource and can recover your pictures, music, etc from the backup folder. In addition to recovering your data, this is a great way to protect yourself if your unit ever gets corrupted and you need to start from anew.

Was it suction Cup Mounted?

We get the local police crime e-mail and have noticed a sharp jump in GPS theft. As a lot of other members have done, you might consider getting the bean bag mount with your next unit so it is easy to stick on the floor under the seat or in the center console. Out of sight, out of mind.

ouch

sad It is true you lost a great tool with all the down loads and custom poi's, I do like your spirit in the fact that you realize that it's just a material thing. Now on the up side you get to get a new GPS and start customizing it, so have fun.

Insurance only pays replacement cost

IMO: Keep your friend and recoup the replacement cost to offset the cost of the new one that you wish to purchase. It is not fair to your friend to have to pay full price for a used/obsolete item.

If the role was reversed you would not want to pay $700 for an item that is now a 3rd of the cost.

sorry , I have also experienced your loss.

Collect the Insurance money and whatever you do stay around $200.00 bucks for a new one and not much more.

Anything more and you will experience the same you did on your last unit, that way you can get a new unit every two years and stay on top of the technology.

Sorry for the lost but

This is your chance to upgrade to the great and latest unit. I know I would be sad too.

Here is an auction for a 660

Here is an auction for a 660 from a pawnbroker. Might be worth looking into - if it was a 3 day auction the time is right one, if it was a 7 day it's not. I could not tell from the auction. Most thieves are just looking for fast cash. Knowing the sn will help a lot. If you don't know it and paired the device w/ a phone the phone should have it.

The Latest and Greatest

My suggestion is to buy a year-old model. Garmin prices fall very fast and the 7x5 models will be 40% off in just a couple months.

760

Sorry to hear about your loss. If you are a member of Costco (or know someone who is) you may want to check your local store. Most have the 760 for $250.

Stolen

I also feel for you. Dang you put all that work into it for someone to take it. I never use the Garmin lock because I felt like it was a pain to put the password in but I am going to do it in the morning. I do not want a theif to benefit from my work. Hang in there.

i did the 'super saving' option on amazon for the unit and the beanbag mount. i purchased all of these on saturday may 9. the carrying case didnt have a super saving option and is arriving as early as wednesday the 13th.

the unit and the beanbag is going to ship on the 14th. and it's estimated delivery date according to amazon is may 21-28.

im not going anywhere soon so im cool with it. just a heads up for you guys in the dc area who are getting these.. it says its coming from sterling VA.

so regular shipping it takes from the time you order to the time it gets to your house is 3-4 days.
'super saving' (save about $7) is no later than 18 days.

the wait excites me. and plus i love tracking my purchases online. i imagine what these delivery guys are doing and the sites where my stuff may be seeing. i just hope theyre not kicking these around!

jrozsnaki--- i read on gpsmagazine.com that the 765t and the 785t are "in most respects-- functionally identical." i think the biggest thing is that voice functionality. i drive a corolla so i think if i take that route it may look cornyish.. i dont know its just me. well if u wanna feel like michael knight be my guest. but i thought im already doing a poush on $ since it cost almost twice as much as a celebrated 760... so yea.. i'll let ya know!
