.

Geocoding is the process of getting the coordinates for an address.

If you are creating a Custom POI file, you will need the coordinates for the locations.

Here's some more information from the FAQs linked at the top of each page.

Geocoder

A geocoder takes an address and provides the coordinates for that location. An easy way to look at it is it takes 123 Main St., Lake Woebegone, MN and translates it to the needed longitude and latitude the GPS needs to find the location.

Speaking of Lat/Long, a Garmin needs decimal degrees instead of the degrees, minutes, seconds we are taught in school. So 39 degrees, 38 minutes, and 37 seconds might look like 39.353875 (or something similar). Longitude works the same way.

1600 Pennsylvania Ave will be getting a new resident in a few weeks. While we know the address, the geographic coordinates are a little different.

It's 38-53-55.3 degrees north latitude,
and 77-2-55.6 degrees west longitude OR

38.89869835310013, -77.03655123710632 to your Garmin.

Clear as mud? A geocoder took the address and provided the coordinates.
