Sending in Coordinate corrections.....

I am getting reports from file managers letting me know that they are getting emails requesting that their coordinates be changed because they are a bit off.

The difference being only a few feet, front of the store or in the street versus in the parking lot.

If your GPS got you to the destination please do not send in a report if it is unnecessary. I would really hate to have our volunteers chasing their tails changing coordinates all the time based on someones preference to be directed into the parking lot and right to the front door.

We are looking to correct things that are crucial to the accuracy of the file.

Thanks,

Miss POI

POI Accuracy

Couldn't agree more. If the co-ordinates take you to within line of sight of the destination then that should be good enough. All the mapsources out there are close but they will never be 100% accurate.

It's so easy

I also agree and if your not happy with those direction go to here http://www.itouchmap.com/latlong.html and scroll down, enter the direction of the poi where it says latitude, longitutde see where it hits, and then just put the curser where you would like to hit and whala you got new direction to put in your poi file. I did it and works great.
It's kinda like going to online school here if you read all the threads you can do most of this stuff yourself. I can honestly say this place can teach you alot, not just about gps's but computors and how to download and searching the internet.Try it you'll like it.

If you ever had to get as many coordinates as these guy you would go blind they are doing agreat thing here and sometime we have to help them out. grin

POI Accuracy

I tell the people that are unfamiliar with Gps and ask me how accurate they are that they can give me an address anywhere in the US and the Gps will get me probably within 300 feet of it and if I can't find it from there I'm an idiot.

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

I agree! Hopefully it's more accurate than that. As long as my destination is within sight, I'm good.

I agree but I do know of a

I agree but I do know of a Costco store in Glendale. Arizona this is off about two blocks and with buildings and trees, You would not know it is there, however, if you keep driving another block or two, you will see it. Since I know where it is, anyway, it is not a problem for me but if I was from out of town, I might be scratching my head wondering where it is.

The correct side of the road may be important

Which side of the road may make a routing difference for some POI's. This is particularly true if you have U-turn avoidance enabled. When there is a divider in the middle of the road, the unit will literally go "out of its way" to route you to arrive on the correct side.

I've also experienced a School Zone POI that was too much off on one side of the road to be "proximity" detected when traveling on the other side.

thanks

These are the types of things that need to be found and fixed;)

Thanks for sharing.

I've been to that Costco and you can miss it if the not paying attention. I'm glad to see Miss POI is willing to do updates on the really bad coordinates.

I think we are referring to coordinates that are close and

on the correct side of the street. If a location can be found using the coordinates then it's pointless to send a correction for the front door.

If the coordinates get you to the locations parking lot then you should be able to find the poi you are looking for, but coordinates that are a block or two away or on the incorrect side of the street should be reported....

Recommend Placing Coordinates Close To Street

Here is my reasoning for placing the coordinates close to the street rather than at the store front. Let's say you have a large mall with main street running in front of the mall and a back street running behind the mall. The only entrance to the mall is from the main (front) street. If you place the coordinates at the store, and the store happens to be closer to the back street than the front street, the GPS will route you to the back street. And thus you will not be at the entrance to the mall.

I found this out the hard way when I created a custom POI and placed the coordinates right at the store front!

Location of POI in wrong state

Is finding the POI listed in the wrong state enough reason to request a correction? Look at the POI for state parks for Tennessee and search Chickasaw State park. My POI editor for Magellan says that this location is in Alabama instead of Tennessee. Both states have a Chickasaw State Park. I have corrected it when I installed the POI in my GPS, but I think it would be nice to have it correct in the POI file for everyone. I'm pretty new here and don't know yet how to contact the person who uploaded the information and to whom I owe a thanks for creating the file in the first place.

There was another state park POI that showed the park location somewhere in South America but I didn't think anyone would be too confused and try to drive to that one.

For updates, contact...

RM_MN,

Ha, yes, being off by a state should be corrected smile

On the web page where you download a POI file, the author is listed and you can click on their name, select the Contact tab on the next page, and send them an email. The people I've contacted have updated the file and, oftentimes, made the change in days or even hours.

No contact tab

Most likely because I'm too new, but I don't have a contact tab. I'll try to remember to contact them when I have a few more days under my belt.

Contact Tab

As an example, for Rest Areas Combined POI at www.poi-factory.com/node/6643, MrKenFL is listed as the author. Click on his name and then click on HIS Contact tab to send him an email. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads up

Thanks for reporting this, I have send a message over to the POI Manager for this project and we will have it fixed sometime soon.

Reporting Errors

Is it best to e-mail the file manager,
or to post it?
Where would you post it?
I'm new here, sorry.
Love the site, thanks.
And I agree if it gets you to with in sight of it,
it's not on error.

Best to email the manager, or some projects have a discussion page for them. If you don't get a response for those, then email miss poi direct. Starting a new thread each time can get confusing and missed...
