Nuvi 260 just few voice prompts

Hi,

I was using for some days the street pilot C550 from a rental car, since I liked I decided to get a GPS for my self and have got a Nuvi 260.

What I noticed is that the 260 "speaks" much less than the 550 like for example turn prompts are just one time and very near to the intersection, while on the C550 the alerts are with sufficient anticipation like turn in 200 yards, then turn in 100 yards and finally turn on xxx street. Also other voice prompts like "stay on your right on street xxx" seems to be minimized on the 260.

Is this just my unit or actually the C550 has a better navigation software than the 260, and if so is there any way to have the 260 provide more voice prompts?

thanks.

Latest Firmware?

Hey em,

I'm surprised by your problems because there are times I think my 260 is talking too much! I usually get at least two turn notifications and at times more than that. The first one always comes 34 seconds before I get to the intersection and the second, just as I am arriving at the intersection to let me know to "turn here". The other turn notification you should hear is if you'll have to make another turn less than 34 seconds after the next turn. IOW it should also say for example, "Turn left on Main St and then turn left." That way you know there is another turn coming up right away and in which direction.

Have you updated to the current firmware? That's the first step. If you have and the problem is still occurring, contact Garmin support. I'm sure they'll make it right.

Agree with Rocknicehunter

Check firmware....Version 4.30 had the problem you described. Garmin put out 4.40 that fixed it. I think 5.0 is out now and haven't heard of any problems (like you describe) with it. Hope this helps....

5.0

Check Voice Settings

I would also suggest you make sure you have a (TTS) voice active on your unit for more detailed announcements.

Thanks

?

Under Settings/Navigation do you have a setting for Voice Prompts and is it set for both Guidance and Status prompts?

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Thanks for all the replays,

Thanks for all the replays, I did upgrade to the 5.0 update and I think it works a little better now still in my opinion the 550 was providing more promps, for sure one: "please fasten you seat belt" which is not present in the 260.

bentbiker: no I don't have that option in the 260 menu.

question for the experts:
1)are the voice promps built-in in the map or in the software? that could expalin the issue since I'm using a different map than the one used with the 550.

Someone knows how to simulate a route that starts from a place different than my current location? Let's say I'm in Florida and want to simulate a trip from Atlanta to Chicago. Thx!

By no means am I an expert. I think it is time for you to meet one. His name is Gary, and I am sure you will find the answer to any question that you may have. Here is his link:

Paul..... Nuvi 765T

I've had my 260 for almost a year

I've had my 260 for almost a year now and it tells me what I want as early and as often as I need it. The only time it didn't was during the brief time that I had the 4.30 update. Within a couple of days Garmin released 4.40 and that cured the problem.

I've never used a 5xx series GPS so I can't make any comparison, but my 260 is just fine. It gives an early voice warning up to a mile ahead, depending on speed, then another one as I approach the turn, then a 3rd at the turn. It also gives a much further advance warning on the green bar at the top.... you just have to glance at it to get as much as a 10 mile advance warning.
