How Frequent?

Jimmy, how frequently do these ads pop up? Do they change or do the same ones recycle? Can they be turned off?

Thanks.

Thanks

Thanks for the info.

Infrequently

Mike,

As of now, I have only seen these ads under the following conditions:

1. When I power the unit and the "Where To" screen displays (couldn't do screenshot since screen shot is defaulted to OFF by Garmin.
2. Very infrequently at a stop. Here in NYC, the city is LOADED with red rights, and I don't see them that often.
3. When I am stopped and at the end of a route. The screens shot in this post is from one of these.

I have tried to "force" a pop up, but even after waiting for 3-5 minutes a few times in the parking lot and nothing happened. So I really cannot determine a sure method on how to make them pop up.

There is no way to delete them. I guess it may be something that Garmin will handle on their end once the ads period expires. I highly doubt they will stay within the unit for life. As for the ads, they are pretty much the same ones. The unit came with 3 ads, and since 10/23 there are only 2 new ones.

Doesn't Sound Bad

Thanks for the info. The ad feature doesn't seem like it would be an irritant, especially with the free traffic reports.

785T

I have not seen any type of ads on my 785t...I wonder if that option is included with my unit

785T comes with an MSN Direct receiver with a trial subscription

The nuvi 785T comes with an MSN Direct receiver with a trial subscription with no ads but it is not free lifetime. A 3 month subscription to MSN Direct is included. After that, subscription fees are $49.95 per year, or $129.95 for a lifetime subscription.

The other 765T & 775T models have free lifetime and have the small ads and use the lifetime traffic alerts from NAVTEQ Traffic.

MSN does not include any ads. You will have a trial period, then you will be able to renew the MSN traffic.

ADS

After seeing the screen shot, I am pleased to see that the ads aren't that intrusive... In my opinion, a small price to pay for free lifetime traffic.

For Now

Keep in mind that Garmin can change the traffic ads at any time. So they can increase the size of the ads, increase the frequency of ads and/or increase the duration of ads.

Right now there appears to be 3 or 4 companies which have paid for ad space. I can only imagine that number will continue to grow. In order to guarantee enough "ad time" to each company, Garmin is going to have to increase the frequency of the ads. That is the only way they can increase their ad revenue.

Ads can be turned off if you get tired of them

If you ever get tired of the ads with the free lifetime traffic you can just turn off the free traffic in the traffic settings menu and the ads are gone.

Garmin has set up the new firmware of the receiver and the GPS to allow you to be able to switch these traffic options off and on and both services use the same traffic receiver model.

You also have the option if you want ad free traffic to subscibe to the Clear Channel lifetime traffic for a one time $60 fee, that is what I have and there are no ads.

The ads are small and once you start moving they disappear.

I don't really notice the ads much anymore. It's like I'm looking at the screen, taking in the information, then, oh, there's an ad. They are really unobtrusive, and not a big deal at all.
