Nuvi 660 Lock-up / Hang / Freeze

A lot of you here know that I have been very happy with my Nuvi 660 since I got it a little over a year ago and joined the POI Factory. Until today, that is.

This is the first long road trip I've taken in quite some time. I drove from Tampa to the hotel room I'm sitting in now, in Manchester, TN. Tomorrow I continue on to Indiana, my destination.

Three times today I ran into a freeze / lock-up / hang problem and the only way out of it was to press the power button and reboot. The last long road trip I took was with the 2008 NT maps loaded and an unknown previous software release version. I am now running the 2010.10 NT maps and software release 4.70.

Also, I was using the mp3 player, listening to music from an SD card I've had from day one. I have the Jack TTS voice selected. Bluetooth was disabled and I was using 3D map view. I do not have an active traffic subscription. I did have a route set from Tampa to this hotel in Manchester, so Jack was giving me turn-by-turn directions. I also have MrKenFL's latest Rest Area Combined file loaded with the outhouse icon and an audio alert file. This and all of my audio alert files were loaded in .wav format to avoid the mp3 player skipping problem which to my knowledge, Garmin has never fixed. So the mp3 music was pausing normally when a rest area audio alert sounded or Jack gave me directions and then continued playing the current mp3.

Here is the problem I encountered. Typically, I will make several deviations from the route when I either pull off the highway into a rest area or if I take an exit to get gas. I just let Jack go through several "recalculating" announcements as he tries to guide me back onto the interstate. What happened today however, was that as Jack was giving me different directions (turn left or turn right onto such-and-such street) heading back to the interstate, the map screen would freeze and all audio stopped (music, alerts and directions). Rebooting got the unit working again, until the next time I pulled off the route for a rest stop or gas. But, it didn't do it every time. I think I made 3 rest area stops and 3 gas stops.

Has anyone else had a problem like this with a 6xx series nuvi? Any ideas or suggestions? I guess I could drive tomorrow without the mp3 player playing to see if that's the problem. I could also switch voices to Jill TTS to see if that changes anything. I could also go into Settings>Navigation>Voice Prompts and try both Guidance Only and None.

I'm just hoping that someone has already run into this problem and maybe knows which direction I should take.

Road Trip - Day 2

Before I headed out this morning, I did a hard reset (button on the rear, under the antenna) of the 660. One other thing I forgot to mention yesterday - normally, when using the mp3 player, I select one of the playlists (.m3u) that I have loaded onto the SD card with the mp3 files. Yesterday, when I was having problems, I had selected all the songs and hit the Shuffle button. Today, I went back to selecting a playlist file.

Long story short, the problem did not reappear today. confused But, I didn't drive as long or get off the route as many times, either. So I don't know if it was the hard reset, using a playlist or just coincidence.

I'll be heading up to Michigan in 2 days so I'll get some more test time to see what happens.
