Business locations

Does anyone know why it is taking businesses to catch on to the importance of GPS coordinates? If I were to start a business today, it would be one of the first things I would publish on my website. Do they have contracts with the likes of Garmin and Magellan that say they aren't allowed to provide this info on their websites? Or do they just not understand the benefits?

I don't think many of them realize the impact of GPS devices yet. If they had an idea about how many of them were in use, I'll bet they'd consider it important.

I also agree. I cannot understand why hotel/motel chains don't post POI files on their home pages with location and pricting information that is upodated once a month. They could send you an email telling you to download the latest edition of the POI file.

Coordinates are just coordinates, so I am not sure how anyone could prevent them from publishing those numbers on the web site or why they would agree to that. That would be like the Yellow Pages or AAA making an agreement that they not put their address and phone number on their web site.

But I think that while GPS units are wildly popular, they still are used by a small percentage of over all customers and an even smaller number of those users probably kow how to enter coordinates into the GPS and instead will enter and address or using the built in POI files. And still and even tinier percentage of GPS users have any clue of how to use or install customer POI files.

So an address and phone number on the web site is probably plenty for 99% of their potential customer base and they probably have more lucrative ways to advertise than creating and maintaining POI files that can be downloaded that would likely be very under utilized.

I know when I'm looking to go somewhere using my GPS, I'd much rather have the addresses than the coordinates. I'm afraid to even think what the Misses would say if I told her she had to use coordinates.

What would be nice would be for every business to have their on POI files available for download directly from their website. That way people could get the address for one location or the POI file for all of their locations.
