my guess it would require a new map, which takes long to download. and the feature must add some new algorytms, that make the coding longer. the default processor in these units might not be fast enough to effectivly handle this extra work.

Don't forget more memory.

That would be nice

I don't know why Garmin don't have lane assistance. Navigon http://navigonusa.com has lane assistance and
street signs and they are cheaper. They also come with
3 years of map upgrades. I don't know how there directions compare.

Garmin is nor introducing

Garmin is nor introducing lane assist on their newer units. Price is most likely related to overall Quality of the unit. I chose Garmin mainly on their reputation, of having the best routing, as reported in some comparison reviews with other manufacturers. I got a 760 for the bluetooth, mp3 player, picture viewer, creating custome routes.

At the time of my purchase, even had I known lane assist was available on other units, evan at a cheaper price, wouldnt have changed my mind.

I would like to have lane assist on my 760, how ever I would not purchase a 765 unless my 760 was stolen.

its a nice, cute feature, but not neccessary, but like everyone i do wish it was a free firware update. they should after all the 4.0 problems

How is the accuracy?

For those with the lane assistance feature, does the Garmin tell you what lane to get it, and can it accurately recognize what lane you are in?

There are times when the unit can't tell if you're on a ramp or the actual freeway, I'm curious of the accuracy of this feature.

.

I believe the lane assist just shows either a picture or a detailed 3-D view of the exit with arrows indicating which is the preffered lane. Atleast that's how it appears on the screen shots that I've seen.

Cool

That sounds like a neat feature, but I wouldn't spend any extra on it. That same feature can be found on most road signs

I wish my Nuvi had lane

I wish my Nuvi had lane assistance. It can be useful when visting some cities with confusing interchanges. But like someone posted above, the Garmin sometimes can't even figure out if you're on the highway, an onramp, or a parallel road. So it sounds like it could not verbally tell you to get over one or two lanes. You'd still have to look at the screen to figure out which lane you need to be in.

Update

When Navigon first came out with lane assist did they provide a free update for older units?

There is a really really sweeping ramp on the road north to New Hampshire from here. I became so enchanted with the SUV icon making the curves on the ramp, that I almost ran off the road. It was a thing of beauty to behold.

A question though: IF I HAD run off the ramp, would it show me in the middle of the grass?

Last year my wife and I flew into San Francisco and rented a Hertz car with their "Never Lost" GPS. The Never Lost system has lane guidance, and we found it VERY useful both as we left the SFO area on our way to our destination and again as we had to find our way back to the Hertz drop off location.
As soon as I can justify upgrading my current GPSr, you can bet your boots the next one will have lane guidance.

Navigon premiered their units with Lane Assist and reality View, when they first brought them to market.

I Can't stress enough to wait for Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving to see the complete offering of all company's before you buy anything, it's the largest single roll out day and sale day of the year.

Black Friday

I agree, since it's already late October, what's another month and a half to wait to see your options and get decent prices? Otherwise I'd wait until May/June next year when the prices really plummet and you get the 2010 maps.
