Trip Log vs Hidden Trip Log

Just made a somewhat long trip via Amtrak from Indianapolis to Albuquerque and back.

Here are the trip log comparisons I came up with my 750.
Definitions:
Trip Log - The one that is available on the 750
when bought.

Hidden Trip Log - The one where you have to
downgrade to software version 2.3 to activate.

On my trip to Albuquerque from Indianapolis I recorded the trip with the Hidden Trip Log. The recordings are as follows :

Points - 112638 recorded (Approx 1 point per second)
Length - 1532 Miles
Elapsed Time - 1 Day 12:07:33 Hr (36 Hrs 7 Min 33 Sec)
Average Speed - 42

Now on my return trip Abq to Indy using the Trip Log here are the recordings:

Points - 5059 recorded (1 continuous log.)
Length - 1532 Miles
Elapsed Time - 1 Day 9:52:03 Hr (33 Hrs 52 Min 7 Sec)
Average Speed - 45

Usings the Trip Log, I recorded my travels around Albuquerque. They are as follows:
Points - 4929 reccorded. (Multiple small gogs)
Length - 401 Miles
Elapsed Time - 9 days.

Combined Trip Logs: Abq travels( 4929 pts401 miles) and the return trip Abq to Indy(5059 pts 1532 miles) is a total of 9988 pts and 1935 miles.

--------------------------
So it seems that the Trip Log on my 750 which is limited to 10000 pts. but is more than sufficient to handle a trip of at least 2000 miles.

On the trip from Indy to Abq I broke down the segments of the Hidden Trip Log. This was done to make the data recorded more manageable. I broke the logs into smaller segments by turning off my 750 and then immediately back on. The segments size ranges from 2 to 5 megs. When converted to .gpx and loaded into MapSource they take anywhere from 30 sec to over a min to load because of the points recorded. I recorded 2 segments Indy to Chicago and 6 from Chicago to Abq. Totaling 112638 pts.

Now on the return I did one continuous recording with the Trip Log (5059 pts 1531 miles 33 hrs 52 mins)).

I see no real need to use the Hidden Trip Log on my 750 any more. As long as I have my computer with me to receive the Trip Log from my 750 in a timely fashion.

This now answers my question as to now upgrade to 4.2.
I didn't want to upgrade because of the no downgrade restriction now incorporated in the newest ver. And I would not be able to use the Hidden Trip Log anymore. It seems I really don't need to use it.

PS(I will still be able to downgrade my 750 using the software and method supplied to me by Garmin when I upgraded to 4.0. I had called Garmin and they gave put the software on my computer and I downgraded back to 2.9. See I don't have BlueTooth so no problems with my 750 using that procedure.

Indy

H Hannah - sounds like I'll be in your neck of the woods later today. I'm getting ready to get on a plane headed to Indy for a week or so. Then, me and my Garmin will be driving back to Florida.

Looking forward to the cooler weather!
