Chit Chat Thread for the week of October 13, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Neat deal on a monitor

A lil geek chit chat....

For anybody interested in a killer deal, This past weekend I picked up a 28' LCD from Tiger Direct for 399.00!
(TG advertises it as 28" But the real specs, and on the box, states 27.5" VIEWABLE)

Honestly? I was expecting it to be junk. You know..'you get what you pay for'. If that had been the case, I would have just returned it. I'm VERY PICKY about my monitors..very.
But.. Uh huh! Its a keeper. Bigtime!!
Link here:
http://tinyurl.com/378f66

Its an I-Inc. Ya. An 'off brand'. But I-INC is a spin off from the Hann-G Panels. Everything is the same about the two even the model number. Of course there is one exception and thats a stand that can't be vertically adjusted as with the stand on the same Hann-G panel. (I'll save the cash rather than have a few inches of vertical play).

Here is a quick shot of it.
Tons of realestate for my video editing!
http://www.doodnet.com/images/28lcd8.jpg

I picked it up from a TG store. I'd rather buy an LCD from a store rather than ship cuz of the risk of getting a bad unit...and I did.
First one had a 'spot'. It was pixel perfect, but it looked like there was a 'drip' between the lamenet sheet when it was built. So back to TG.
When I got there I talked to a sales guy and said "Listen, lets save ourselves both the headaches. I have my lappy in the car with a dead pixel tester. Can we unbox one, and test it?" They agree'd. Unboxed the first replacement. Stuck pixel. The guy agree'd..Stuck pixels suck. hehehe
Second one.. A WINNER! Pixel perfect, and no hint of any halo effects(bleeding of the backlight)! Even then, these panels (reviews of Hann-G's) tend to have low rates of shipping dead pixels.

Anyway. I got this puppy home and fell in love with it! I'm driving it at its top resolution of 1920x1600! Using a DVI to HDMI connector that was included with the panel(A very nice touch for them to include!). Granted, its your typical TN panel, but the same IPS panel would easily be double+ in cost.

It replaced a 21" Sony E500 Trinitron CRT. I Loved my trinny and knew if I ever stepped up to an LCD, it would have to be AT LEAST 25". Why Cuz a 21" widescreen LCD compared to a 21" 4x3 screen has less realestate(You have only to do the math). Matter 'o fact, I laughed at the 'premium' for widescreens with the same diagonal measurements. Pffft. You pay MORE for less pixels! But thats just an aside.

I even fired up a few Need for Speed iterations (Carbon and Most wanted) that I havent touched for a loooong time....WOW!! I'm not a gammer, but I like my racing sims and this screen really made a difference. No ghosting that I could reliably detect.(They claim a 3ms response)

Anyway... I just thought I'd mention this.
Its a killer deal. Dont let the I-INC name scare you. Its really a Hann-G panel! Just less expensive.

I swear..sitting in front of a 28"'er makes you feel like you can rule the world!! grin

I just thought I'd pass this info, and mild review on...If your looking for a huge LCD..check it out!

I didnt buy any extended warrenty..so I hope it passes the inherent longevity tests. grin

Yeah Beer!

A family member sent this to me...just something to make you smile during the tough times!!!I guess I made the right investment!

If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you will have $49.00 today.
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you will have $33.00 today.
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you will have $0.00 today.
But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer and then turned in the aluminum cans for a recycling refund, you will have received $214.00.
Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg.
A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means that, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon!

Sounds to me like beer's a good buy! Thanks for the investment advice! LOL!

Boise cool-down

Nope, still sick. Not as sick as the last couple of weeks, I just have a nasty cough that is hanging on.

Hopefully I will be back to normal by the end of the week.

Miss POI

I'm not ready for the cool down we had last week. Seems like a lot of people have the crud. This weekend looks better, but don't know if I'm ready for winter razz

I loved the snow

I kind of like the snow last Friday, it was really pretty.

I am excited about fall though, I just wish that I could bring a little bit of Philly here to make it a bit more colorful. There is nothing like a Philly thunderstorm. I miss those the most.

Miss POI

I know

I had a computer stolen plus printer. The gal cleaning the room didn't pull her cart close to the door and a person roaming the halls took it so said the hotel. 1000.00 maximum payment per their insurance.

CSI Kit for the trip...

I'm off to Columbus (OH) for a couple of days. Staying at thr Hyatt, one of the "better" hotels downtown. Wish I could procure a CSI (Crud Scene Investigation) Kit to check out all the little unpleasantries in my hotel room. On second thought, maybe it's better not to know.

"Jack" will be tagging along for the ride. He usually gets me to unfamiliar places with absolutley no problems.

Enjoy your weekend!

(Gonna try jumping into the

(Gonna try jumping into the 'roll' of this thread... grin )

Just got the first glimpses of our data center site.
My security cams I had shipped last week are up and running..but need tweaking. The web site I built for access only needs IP changes..and a lil bit more work to make it look 'pretty'.
Full access and streaming vid of the facility wont happen till we get 'da big pipe' provisioned next week. Till then..slow VPN pipe.

Looking forward to this weekend where I have to work the weekend AGAIN (Last weekend was upgrading my Blackberry Enterprise server. Users love/hate me.). Gotta support a big database move to a new cluster. I have to worry about my webcasting system.
XML changes identified..almost staged and ready to go.

(Hows that? grin )

Today's Buffalo Bills game

At the Buffalo Bills game today (held in Buffalo), balloons were released as a pre-game celebration and snagged on a transformer causing it to blow out. That caused CBS difficulty in broadcasting today's game!

Right now the game is on in our area but CBS keeps warning viewers they don't know how long it will last.

Not waiting for the next week chat to begin

It's open season for being first to post on next week's chat thread. Yours truly is not waiting up for the shoe to drop.

I'm sleeping in. Yep, and even going to bed fairly early for moi. (Maybe I show Central Time, but I am currently Eastern time zone.)

Too much to do around the house, getting ready for our trek south in less than a month now. I am getting very excited about the trip, so I can put my Nuvi 880 to its first real LOOOONNNG test.

It is lovely here with the leaves changing color, but I sure do miss my tropicalesque garden and having girls' night out where they serve $1 margaritas. You'll have to join us, Miss POI!
