Nuvi 7*5T series

Hi everyone what do you think about the new Nuvi's 7*5T series coming out. I think they are the best Nuvi's to come out.I like the features in these units even better than the 800 series with there voice activation. Here is a link to the Nuvi's:

if you dont allready own a nuvi, a 7x5 would be the top of the line right now, if you dont care about voice recognition. I have a 760, and no reason to upgrade anytime soon

no sour grapes

I wouldn't turn down a new unit, but my 350 nuvi holds up surprisingly well alongside the new models shown. As long as it keeps functioning and doesn'i get stolen or dropped, I expect it will stay with me until I invest in new cars with deficient dash units.

I too have a Nuvi 350 and it has done a wonderful job so far. The only complaint I have had with this is in a situation where you have multiple exits and the 350 doesn't do a great job in identifying the exact ramp to take. With these new units there is no guessing and will even tell you which lane you should be in to take the correct ramp well in advance. This alone is worth the upgrade no matter what Nuvi you have now. Of course this is just my opinion. wink

Wrong ramp?

So yes, once in maybe months or even years of driving I get off on the wrong ramp. Within a few seconds Karen does her recalculating bit and send me back where I belong. I can't justify upgrading just for the lane advice. I keep trying to eliminate that feature in my wife now. and that's a much more expensive upgrade than nuvi.

To bad they don't include it in a firmware upgrade.

Oh you just don't know what your missing, lane assist is the BOMB, it is so nice to have. To bad it took another company to come out with it (Navigon)and make it standard to their products, for Garmin to realize they also needed it but figured the could charge a premium for it, thats our Garmin.

I notice the auto manufactures do the same thing.
When they come out with Bigger and Better things they build them into the new model and don't even try to upgrade your old model to the new specs.

I can't believe that a company would do something like that!!!!!!!

In order to be fair to all, I demand anything new to Never come out EVER! just upgrade all the old stuff, so we don't have whiner's.

and this should all be free upgrades.

my grandmother bought the first toaster to ever come out, i demand they upgrade it for free, she paid good money at that time. its not fair she can only make 2 slices a time, and some people 4.

Yeah... they need to upgrade everyone's device. But it shouldn't be free... no, they need to pay us for the inconvenience of having to upgrade and for not including the upgrade on the original device!!

Seriously, why would they just offer it as an upgrade?? Isn't the purpose of newer models to be "better" than the previous model? That's how the companies make money. Would you ever tell your employer to NOT pay you more for experience or specific knowledge, that it's their "free upgrade??"

I agree with what you're saying but you are not getting what I was trying to convey.Let me try to put it this way. Lane assist is NOT SOMETHING NEW.It is available on other GPS's and in fact it is available on units that costs much less than what Garmin wants.
If this is some kind of ground breaking technology that Garmin has put tons of funds into R&D then yes charge a premium. But no, they didn't do this did they. All they did was copy some other companies feature. The Chinese do it all the time but at least when they do it they sell it for less. And yes I know they sell it for less because of labor costs but mostly it cost almost nothing to engineer it, it's already done.
So no I don't expect Garmin to upgrade older devices but I believe they are over inflating newer models just because it is a Garmin. That's the main point I was try to get across.

Don't forget, you're not getting just the lane assist. You're also getting, I believe (just skimming over an article on the 755T), more memory, US and Europe Maps, faster processor, and OF COURSE the Garmin name.

Doesn't matter what it is, sometimes you're going to pay more just for the name. Question is, is the reputation behind the name worth the extra coin??

Just Got Mine

I just got my 755T yesterday and have had a little time to test it.

I live in a rural area, so have not had a chance yet to try out lane assist or traffic, etc.

It came with 2009 maps.

Pros:

1. Superior ease of use.

2. Free lifetime traffic! It does include ads, but only when you're stopped more than 10 seconds supposedly. I think Garmin brought this out because of growing market share by Navigon. You can also purchase an MSN adaptor and pay them for traffic, weather reports, etc. (Standard on 785T).

3. Loud, clear speaker plus FM transmitter.

4. Picks up satellites fast.

5. Multi routing as on the rest of the 700 series.

6. Where am I? and car locate.

7. Ability to navigate with photos and to transfer points from Google Maps/Mapquest.

8. Automatic time zones.

Cons:

1. POI's. Before this most of my previous experience with auto GPS was with my cell phone where I tried a couple of providers of which TeleNav seemed to be the best. I've heard so many good things about Garmin's excellent routing and POI's. Maybe the POI's are more complete in the bigger city, but where I live it is sorely lacking. Telenav was far superior in this respect. The major market in town is Larry's Family Foods, and Telenav had it. The Garmin didn't show it when I did a list of grocery stores. When I searched for it, I found an entry called "Larry Foods" that was miles away and seemed to be around where Tall Timbers grocery was (also owned by Larry's). We are about 25 miles away from the main city in this area. When I search for POI's it seems to list a lot in another city about 50 miles away, and not show the ones in the closer, larger city. Overall the POI's in this area with Telenav were far superior.

2. As previously mentioned, I heard a lot of excellent comments about Garmin's routing. I tried having the 755T give directions to Wal-Mart from here and it had me making a left on a street where it's not allowed (you have to make a right and then a u-turn, then had me going past Wal-Mart on the highway, taking Northwoods Road (which runs kind of in a circuitous semi-circle back to the highway. and then back to Wal-Mart in the opposite way. I expected greatly improved routing with the Garmin over the cell phone nav provders. This doesn't seem to be the case. As far as the Navteq maps go, they seem to be very good so far. I took a route to a lake yesterday that ends with an unnamed dirt road that goes for about a half mile. The road was clearly marked on the map.

All in all, I'm happy with the new unit, although disappointed that the routing and POI database isn't better with the new GPS and maps. This is strictly a preliminary report as I haven't had a chance to use it much yet. I will post a further report when I've had the chance to use it more and take a trip where I have to use freeways and go through large cities for the traffic, lane assist, 3d buildings, etc.

Garmin Nuvi 755T Further Comments

Ok, I've been using the 755T some more and except for the weird Walmart thing, lately most of the directions have been spot on.

I'm getting happier with the unit all the time, but I wish Garmin would have included a way to avoid roads on the route.

Also often I search for a POI and it lists the closest ones in a city about 50 miles away. To get them for a closer city that's 20 miles away, I have to enter the nearby city and have it search from there.

At least it hasn't been taking me up dirt roads that end at someones house, or that don't exist like the cellphone GPS I was using occasionally did.

765T

Is $511 at amazon.com. It shows in stock 1-3 months. When I've ordered things with 1-3 wait, I've gotten them in 2-3 weeks.

Do you have Mapsource? You can set avoidance from there and upload it to your unit.

Thanks, PCPro.

I just have the Mapsource City Navigator databases that were in memory in the unit.

What exactly do I need to get the Mapsource you're talking about and set avoidances?

hi , i have just ordered a nuvi 765t and should have it next week , will let you know how it performs, i hope it is better than the nuvi 770 of which i had a lot of trouble with and so sent it back .so i am keeping my fingers crossed about this one.hil2

In MapSource, choose from menu Edit -> Preferences (or Cntrl+Shift+P). Click on the tab Routing then the button Advance. Upload when done.

Thanks PCPro.

I'm still not sure how to do this. I found I did have MapSource on my puter, but only the Topo 2008 maps are on it and it will not route by roads that I can see, and When I click on Preferences there is no routing tab.

How do I get my CityNavigator 2009 maps from my Garmin unit to Mapsource?

Thanks again for your help!

You need to run the install from the DVD, make sure you have your Nuvi connected and use the autostart as I once just ran the install on the disk and it only updated my GPS.

Call Garmin and ask for the MapSource DVD so that you can manage your Favorites. They will typically give it to you for free, charging only $8-$10 for shipping. This DVD will also have the maps on it and will install them to your computer when it installs MapSource. Well worth the cost, plus you have a backup if you ever delete or corrupt your map files.

re: Order The DVD

Ok, I'll try doing that.

Thanks so much, johnc!

If something works...

The new NUVI's look great, but I then to have the mindset of "If it isn't broke, why fix it". surprised I may pick up a new one in a few years, but for now I will wait and see. cool

Do you have to upload all of the maps in order to the avoidances on the nuvi?

In other words, if you want to add a single avoidance, you have to transfer 1GB+ of data to your device?

I only have the current map (2009) installed, you do not upload the map, just the data (POI, routes etc).

You can't transfer avoidances :-(

margelef wrote:

You can't transfer avoidances to the Nuvi, unfortunately.

You CAN, however, set custom avoidances in MapSource and when MapSource builds a route, it will honor your avoidances. When you transfer the completed ROUTE to your Nuvi, it will have been built to avoid those areas.

Note that if you later edit the route on the Nuvi, it will not know about the avoidances and it may try and use those areas/roads when it rebuilds the route.

The Custom Avoidance feature of MapSource is only useful when you build routes in MapSource. It won't help us with on-the-fly routing that we create on the Nuvi itself.

765t - $499

Best Buy has the nuvi 765t on sale for $499.00 this week. That's below even the cheapest online places!

Plus, if you saved one of the $50.00 off any Garmin coupons that were floating around a couple of months ago (like I did smile ) it brings a new 765t down to $449.00 - not bad!

New 755T

We have a 660 and I needed a decent GPS for my car.

The lane directions and street names tipped me over to the 755T.

Have no interest in bluetooth phone stuff.

luv my 765T

I just got the 765T and love it!!! I have been putting it through the test in Phoenix and so far so good. Some of heard about the Ads that come with the free traffic however I can tell you that I don't even notice and rarely see them.

I'll test it out through the holidays as I travel around the west coast and then let the group know what I really think..
